After three years away from the UFC, Jon Jones returned at UFC 285 and quickly finished Ciryl Gane to become the new UFC Heavyweight Champion. Jones is now in celebratory mode after landing on the short list of fighters to win two-division championships. Even though Jones won tonight, he lost in a pushup contest against inspiring wheelchair racer, Zion Clark after his fight.
It was a heartwarming interaction between Jon Jones and Zion Clark, who greatly respected each other. The exchange turned into a competition between them when they decided to compete in a pushup competition. Jones gave up after 40 pushups, making Clark the winner. It looks like no one, including Jones, can win everything.
Jon Jones made his bout against Ciryl Gane look very easy. Before the introduction, Jones was asked to remove the tapings on his foot. It appeared that Jones sustained some kind of injury. But once the fight started, a confident Jones hunted Ciryl Gane, looked for takedowns, and submitted with a guillotine choke.
Jones will without doubt have an amazing after-party following the victory as showcased by his interaction with Zion Clark. After the win, Jones was surrounded by his fiancée, father, and brothers inside the Octagon. UFC 285 will be remembered as the event where Jon Jones fulfilled his destiny of capturing the Heavyweight Championship.
Jon Jones Secures GOAT Status
The GOAT conversation in MMA will most likely be put to rest after the performance of Jon Jones at UFC 285. In a sport that featured the likes of Anderson Silva, George St-Pierre, Demetrious Johnson, and Khabib Nurmagomedov, Jon Jones fulfills his destiny to become the Undisputed GOAT of MMA.
The resume of Jon Jones as a Light Heavyweight is enough to solidify him as the GOAT. He defeated legendary fighters like Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Glover Texiera, Alexander Gustafson, and Daniel Cormier in his reign as the Light Heavyweight Champion. These fighters were Champions or Championship contenders in the division. Now, he has captured the Heavyweight title and defeated Ciryl Gane in the first round, a feat that has never happened before.
Jones will now look to fight Heavyweight GOAT Stipe Miocic sometime later this year to solidify his status in the Heavyweight Division. Stipe has not fought since his Knockout loss against Francis Ngannou last year.
