Costa and Chimaev got into a near brawl at the Performance Institute
Paulo Costa and Khamzat Chimaev are two loudmouths that love to fight. Today at the UFC PI, the two unknowingly crossed paths and what proceeded was entirely in character for both athletes.
Costa is currently in the US after his high-paced Fight Of The Night against Luke Rockhold at UFC 278. Since that fight, he’s stayed back in the US to determine the course of his future with the UFC. Managerial jargon aside, Costa knows one thing is true to his heart, training. He was seen working some rounds with Jake Shields, Nate Diaz’s BJJ coach despite having a broken hand.
Chimaev meanwhile has been in camp for his fight against Shields’ teammate, Nate this weekend. It will be the first PPV he headlines and hence the Chechen has taken it upon himself to grab as many headlines as he can. From his comments about wanting to “Murder Nate” as the UFC’s henchman to his promises to fight Adesanya as the welterweight picture clears itself, everything has been headline-worthy.
Khamzat Chimaev taunts Paulo Costa by mentioning defeat to Israel Adesanya
It was maybe in this same line that a brawl broke out between Costa and Chimaev at the UFC PI earlier today. Costa who was training alongside Shields was approached by Chimaev and some of his entourage, standing outside the cage. Chimaev was apparently offended by some post made by Costa that mentioned him. However, as his recent Ariel Helwani interview revealed it is actually his girlfriend Tamara who does the posting.
That would explain the look of confusion on Costa’s face when he walked over to Chimaev screaming, “You wanna fuck me up? ” repeatedly. Chimaev was present with his entire team while Costa was alone, and had just started training with Shields that morning. However Jake went along with Costa regardless as he confronted Chimaev.
When Costa replied to Chimaev’s repeated “You wanna f*** me up? ” he said, “You want to fight me? ” leading the Chechen to agree. Without any further thought Costa started moving towards the cage door to be face to face with Chimaev. At this point, some among the Chechen’s team headed over to stop Costa from leaving the cage.
When Costa returned to his original spot, Chimaev started taunting the Brazilian by mentioning the time he was decimated by Israel Adesanya. “I want to fight you, I’m not scared of you”, said Costa from across the staircase that separated the two. By this point Chimaev was restrained by his teammates as Costa started hurling abuses in his native Portuguese while also flipping the bird.
Chimaev was then escorted down the stairs by the rest of his team as Costa went back to training. Since Chimaev already wishes to fight at middleweight, is this a bout that interests you? Let us know!
