Former UFC middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold returned to the octagon to take on former title challenger, Paulo Costa at the co-main event of UFC 278. It was a monumental event, and these two walked inside the octagon with as much intensity as possible.
Rockhold was coming in after a 3-year layoff, and he ended his previous run on a 2-fight skid. The former champion wanted the best guy upon his return, and Costa stepped up to the challenge. Costa too was on a 2 fight skid, and he wanted to make a statement with a win over Rockhold.
After some crazy back and forth during the presser, it was time to finally settle things inside the octagon at the co-main event of UFC 278. Luke and Costa immediately started trading strikes, and a stuffed takedown attempt from Costa allowed him to get on top, and land some heavy elbows on his opponent. He busted Rockhold’s nose early in the fight, and that severely compromised his breathing.

Luke was visibly breathing heavy, and he got fatigued, Costa went in for the kill, and surprisingly enough, Luke’s chin held up, and he stayed in the fight. Both these guys were visibly fatigued, and an accidental groin punch from Costa momentarily halted the action. They got right back to work, but again it was mostly them swinging big strikes and then taking big rests to catch their breath.
Fans were thoroughly enjoying the action, and Rockhold caught Costa with a big straight punch, he didn’t had the energy to went in for the kill so he kept on touching him until Costa took his down in the final minutes of the fight. Rockhold’s fighting spirit was on full display, and he scrambled to gain the top mount position.
Luke knew he was losing the fight, but he had to leave his mark on Costa, he rubbed his bloodied nose all across his face, and just like that one of the greatest middleweight contest came to an end.
Costa was declared the winner, but everyone was impressed by what Rockhold was able to achieve, and after being overwhelmed with emotions, Rockhold announced his retirement from the sport of MMA.
