WATCH: Phil Hawes gets into a heated war of words with Daniel Cormier after brutal knockout of teammate Deron Winn
Cormier and Hawes being moved apart by Herb Dean
Phil Hawes and Daniel Cormier got into a verbal spat at UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs Emmet during the prelims of the card. The incident occurred during the prelims where DC’s AKA Teammate was set to face off against Hawes. It has played into the continuing narrative of DC being biased while calling fights that feature his former teammates or sparring partners.
Deron who shares a lot of attributes with DC, being of short stature for his division and being a master wrestler was scheduled to face Phil Hawes in his 5th UFC fight. The fight didn’t go according to plan for the AKA Veteran as he was unable to get inside the pocket, a must for someone his size to either capitalize on his wrestling or even land some shots. He was kept at bay by Hawes’ jabs and was neutralized as a threat by the end of round 1.

Though Deron would try it all over again in the 2nd round, he was caught by hard elbows on his way inside, sending him wobbling to the cage, ultimately ending in Herb Dean stepping in to stop the fight once he was down on his knees, protesting the stoppage. It was after this while the official decision was about to be announced that the verbal spat between DC and Hawes took place.
Hawes, high on adrenaline looked directly at DC who was waiting to conduct Hawes’ octagon interview screaming,“You picked the wrong Pony! Yeah , You dog You know what I’m talking about” As DC was approaching Hawes continued, “I’ll cool off and then next week you can fight me”
An angry Cormier responded saying, “I don’t pick fights, be respectful” then the UFC Hall of Famer continued, “You didn’t beat me. I don’t pick fights. Look at what happened” DC responded while answering Hawes’s criticism hinting at him calling the shots on who his teammates are set up against. Following this as HErb Dean and UFC security stepped in Hawes cooled off and said, “I apologize”
While sharing a lot of physical attributes with DC, it cannot be said that Deron caries any of those inside the cage as he is now 2-3 in his 5 UFC Fights. DC earlier responded to fan criticisms about him being biased while calling fights saying, “I can’t help people see what I see and that’s on them”
