Watch: Robert Whittaker displays HILARIOUS technique to avoid Alex Pereira’s power
Robert Whittaker (L), Alex Pereira (R)
The UFC middleweight division is stacked with absolute killers and Robert Whittaker is obviously one of them. Whittaker has previously held the UFC middleweight title. However, things have changed a lot since he was the champion. Whittaker lost his title to Israel Adesanya in 2019 and couldn’t manage to regain it in their rematch at UFC 271. Izzy was also dethroned from the top spot by Alex Pereira via TKO at UFC 282.
Recently, Whittaker did an interview with Submission Radio, where the fighter was asked about a potential fight with the reigning champion. Against Pereira’s brutal power Whittaker has a very basic strategy which is to evade his hits.
He said: “The same way I deal with every guy with knockout power, do these (shakes head in evading motion) ones. I have fought a lot of dudes that hit like a truck. Yeah, try my best not to get hit.”
While it is a good plan to have, it is never going to be that easy to avoid getting hit against Pereira, who is an elite striker. However, Whittaker’s experience fighting Adesanya will definitely help the Australian against Pereira. While the match-up looks interesting, it will definitely take some time to get materialized.
Robert Whittaker is not concerned about a possible middleweight title shot in the future
Right after the Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya fight, talks about Khamzat Chimaev fighting Pereira started to circulate. Nothing has been confirmed yet and Robert Whittaker doesn’t care about it either. When talking about it he said:
“They’ve always done weird crap like this, I’ve seen weirder stuff happen around titles. It is what it is. It’d be interesting, I guess. I don’t really care about anything.” According to Whittaker, he will probably fight Paulo Costa next February and will then think about his next opponent.
“I’m gonna fight [Paulo] Costa in February. And then whoever is in that top spot, I’m gunning for” said Whittaker. Whittaker has a huge fan base who are eagerly waiting for the ‘reaper’ to come back and fight. It will be interesting to see what the UFC has planned for him. His last fight against Marvin Vettori was a light work for the fighter and going into the fight with Costa, he is definitely the favorite.
