Watch as Zhang Weili accidentally strikes her coach during training

Zhang Weili is hard at work and focused on retaining her spot back at the top of her division. Ever since she was KO’ed by Rose Namajunas in the first round of their first fight, Weili has found a new love for the sport and has vastly improved in all aspects of it.

Before her rematch against Rose, Zhang took to training under the wing of former Olympic champion, Henry Cejudo. Here in camp alongside Deveison Figueiredo, Weili would polish up her wrestling and striking in accordance with that of the Triple C’s high standards. All of this would be visible in her rematch when she went toe to toe with Namajunas for all 5 rounds, in what many considered to be a fight she was winning.

Despite the hiccups in her title rematch, Weili would stay on track to the title when she accepted to rematch Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the number 1 contender spot. While their first fight gained all the praise for the constant back and forth that also highlighted the resilience of the two fighters, the second time around was very different.

Weili not in the mood to send another one of her fights to the hall of fame, came out aggressive in a performance that was a far cry from her previous outing against Namajunas. Keeping on the aggression, Weili would knock out Joanna via a spinning backfist in round 2, causing the former strawweight champion to opt for retirement.

Since this victory, Zhang Weili has been seen by many as the only true contender who has a claim to the title. She has however not stopped and after her last fight in Singapore, immediately took her camo back to China in preparation for a title fight against Carla if they are offered on.

Today Weili posted a blooper from one such training camp where her coach, John Holding the pads found out firsthand what her opponents usually feel. Working in standard boxing gloves, Coach John was holding the pads for the former champ when she missed one of her strikes and directly landed on the chin of her coach.

Captioned, “I’m sorry little coach” Weili can be seen flinching once she realizes what just occurred. Connecting with a hard right hook, Weili as innocent as ever would turn around and behind the coach who is trying to gain back his head

Carla Esparza has agreed to give Weili a title shot but that will require her to take some months off to recover. Carla won her title through a decision in one of the lowest output championship fights ever and has said she may need time out for surgery. Many have accused her of avoiding the inevitable fight against Weili.
