Fight fans are known for their quick eye, when it comes to details regarding their favourite or most hated fighter, the fights lined up and also the intricacies of the promotions themselves (be it the UFC, ONE FC, or Bellator).
Turns out, it’s not just the fighters’ details they are interested in, but also the ring girls. And not just ogling them – well that’s part of it at least.
Heading into UFC 275, UFC ring girl Carly Baker uploaded a sultry selfie to her Instagram page, having just landed in Singapore for the PPV event headlined by Jiri Prochazka and Glover Texeira.
Baker cut a beautiful figure in her picture, and fans pointed this out to her in the comments. However, what was even more noticeable in the comments was the fans’ interest in the size of her bathroom and the small bathtub!
One quick look at her picture shows the fact that the bathtub isn’t exactly big by any standards. And fans dished on this in the comments. Some notable comments were, “IS THAT A SMALL BATH OR A BIG SINK? ANSWER THE QUESTION PLEASE!”, “That grouting on the tiles is horendous. Also the colour coordination is just too 70’s. The bath/sink is a questionable size” and “That’s not much of a bathroom.”
Ring girls have created controversy in the UFC
The inclusion of ring girls in the ceremonial weigh-ins, faceoffs, and the fights itself has become the forefront of quite some controversy in the UFC’s history.
The most outspoken critic of their participation in events is Khabib Nurmagomedov, who said last year that “Ring girls are the most useless people in martial arts.” Despite facing backlash from fans and fighters as well, Khabib Nurmagomedov had no intention to double down on his controversial take. He said, “I never think about whether people gonna like this or not… I don’t care, this is my opinion. Who cares? I know I’m right, in my mind. A couple of months ago, someone ask me about… I have a promotion. I have my own promotion Eagle Fighting Championship and someone ask about why there’s no ring girls there. I say because I think there’s no reason. It’s my opinion.”
Notably, Khabib’s promotion EAGLE FC does not feature ring girls. Being associated with excessive scrutiny, women in the UFC, a la Valentina Shevchenko and Laura Sanko have spoken out against Khabib’s stance.
While he did face backlash, there are certainly factions within the UFC’s that believe that ring girls do not deserve a spot in the promotion. Whatever the case, rest assured, this debate will not settle for some time.
