“He’ll crumble like the Twin Towers” – When Israel Adesanya went too far with his “trash talk” against Yoel Romero
Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero
Israel Adesanya is a huge PPV star. However, sometimes the fighter has crossed the lines in an attempt to “sell the fight”. One such moment took place back in 2020 when The Last Stylebender took on Yoel Romero in a middleweight title matchup.
Among the several superstars in the business, former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya definitely ranks at the top. The fighter from New Zealand made his debut in 2018 and became the undisputed middleweight champion a year after his debut. For his title defense, he was matched against the dangerous Yoel Romero at UFC 248.
At a pre-fight press conference that took place in Auckland, Adesanya was going in at Yoel Romero, who attended the presser via video call. Adesanya who was tired of all the hype behind “Boogeyman” Romero vowed to shut him down in their fight. However, in an attempt to talk trash, the former champ went too far with his comments and ended up finding himself in hot waters.
“He’s human, like anyone else, and everyone like to make this myth about, ‘Oh, he’s steel, like kicking steel,’ or you hit him and he doesn’t fall,” said Adesanya in the presser. “I’ll touch him enough times and eventually he’ll crumble like the Twin Towers,” added the superstar.

UFC fans are no strangers to hearing wild stuff from their favorite fighters. Adesanya’s “trash talk” however, triggered a large group of people as they slammed the fighter for being insensitive towards the 9/11 tragedy. Despite all the build-up to the event, the fight disappointed a lot of fans.
A New Yorker made Israel Adesanya feel bad about his joke
Adesanya’s joke definitely troubled a lot of his fans. One such fan was kind enough to let the fighter know about his feelings and revealed how it was insensitive of the fighter to crack a joke about something so devastating. In his Instagram story, The Stylebender immediately posted a screenshot of the comment from a fan, who happened to have witnessed the tragedy first-hand and followed it with an apology.
“The comment in the last story sums up how I feel about this situation. I never made a joke about people dying or made light of the tragic event that was 9/11. I was simply rambling and my brain worked faster than my mouth in a moment to chose the wrong euphemism. You speak on the mic enough times and you’re bound to miss the mark with some bars. I did on this one and for that I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful in the future with my words,” the fighter said.

Israel Adesanya went on to successfully defend his title against Romero at UFC 248. He was still criticized for his fight and then went on to shut his critics with a stunning knockout win against Paulo Costa in the same year.
