UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling is one of the most dominant champions in bantamweight history. Sterling revealed that he wants to let his teammate and friend Merab Dvalishvlli shine in the division. Merab and Sterling have trained together at the Serra-Longo gym for a long time. The other reason for “Funk” to move up in weight is due to the large weight cut he has to go through to make 135 pounds. He feels that it will be easier to make weight in a heavier division.

Sterling has always faced trouble cutting weight and a move to featherweight will help him to retain some of his muscle. It will also allow him to have more power and durability in his fights. Sterling may want a fight with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski as soon as he moves. Volkanovski may want Sterling to work his way up to the title and fight some top contenders at featherweight.
