It was a far cry from their first encounter, which took place at UFC 248 in March 2020 and was dubbed “the greatest female fighter of all time” by many. Zhang, who was the 115-pound champion at the time, won that fight by a razor-thin split decision. Following her knockout loss to Zhang on Saturday night in Singapore, Jedrzejczyk declared her retirement from the ring, bringing an end to an era in the division. In the aftermath of that decision, Zhang had nothing but appreciation for the Polish star. In the post-fight interview she stated, “Before I became a UFC fighter, Joanna was the champion,”. “She is like a role model. I want to chase her [accomplishments] every day”

Zhang’s most recent victory was not only a solid contender for “Knockout of the Year,” but it also puts her up for a future fight with current strawweight champion Carla Esparza. For that fight, Zhang already has a site in mind.

She further added in the interview “I want [to] fight with Carla in Abu Dhabi because I know there’s a fight there in October,” Zhang said. “I think Carla is a special fighter, too, and I know that can be a really good fight. Also, for me and for her – not China or the U.S. So we can fight in another country, so it’s fair for both of us.”
