The beef between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington was known to the whole MMA community. What’s sad is that they were once best friends who trained and lived together. Recently, a video edit of them went viral on X. As such, former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling shared the video along with his thoughts about it. He compared Covington-Masvidal with his friendship with Merab Dvalishvili.

Aljamain Sterling stated that seeing two good friends turned into enemies was disappointing. They even fought against each other at UFC 272. ‘The Funk Master’ mentioned his friendship with fellow bantamweight Merab Dvalishvili and said he would never fight him for the sake of money. This is actually pretty shit to see how things went left for these guys who were once good friends and training partners. Just a reminder of why I would never turn my back on my brother, Merab, for a few dollars, for the world’s “amusement.”

Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili were longtime friends and training partners. They train out of the ‘Serra-Longo Fight Team’ in New York. Although they belong to the same weight class, they’ve rejected every opportunity to fight each other.

This included when Sterling reigned as the bantamweight champion, and Dvalishvili was the #1 contender, ‘The Machine’ refused to fight his friend. However, the case with Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington remain much different.

Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington fought each other in the main event of UFC 272. The whole storyline for the event was about friends turned into enemies. As such, the UFC promoted their hatred and cashed in on their beef. But, their friendship cracked long before their fight in 2017. However, Covington won the fight comfortably by unanimous decision.

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal were friends and helped each other grow in the UFC together. However, after ‘Chaos’ embraced his new fight persona in 2017, things went south.

The building feud turned them into worst foes. Now, they have absolute hatred for each other, and they even fought in the octagon in 2022. On the other hand, Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili are close friends and have outright refused to fight each other.

Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili faced much criticism for not fighting each other. Even UFC CEO Dana White was frustrated they didn’t agree to fight, especially when they were in the top two spots of the bantamweight division. Now, ‘The Funkmaster’ looked back on Covington-Masvidal history and shared his thoughts on why he didn’t and won’t fight his friend. Fight fans reacted to his comments on X. Fight fans had conflicting opinions about the two friendships. But most of them agreed with Aljamain Sterling. Currently, Merab Dvalishvili is rumored to fight Henry Cejudo in 2024. As for Aljamain Sterling, he hinted at a move up to featherweight, leaving his friend to take over the bantamweight division. On the other side, Masvidal retired from MMA in 2023, and Colby Covington fights for the title against Leon Edwards in UFC 296.
