Austen Lane is one of the few NFL athletes who has successfully integrated himself into the world of MMA. Transitioning into a different sport is as it is difficult for many pros. However, when it comes to changing your domain to a combat sport, the road is even harder. Lane, who has already made this journey and is now signed by the UFC, reveals which NFL athlete would fare better in MMA.

Austen Lane was a fifth-round pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2010 NFL draft. Lane played defensive end for Jacksonville Jaguars for three seasons before switching teams. After his retirement, Austen Lane made his pro mixed martial arts debut in 2017. With a record of 12 fights and 3 losses, Lane is currently signed by the UFC. In an interview with Fansided, Austin Lane was questioned who among Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes would fare better in MMA. Lane had an amusing reply as to why Aaron Rodgers would have an easier transition to his world.

Aaron Rodgers is on that ayahuasca kick right now, so you know what I mean? When you do that ayahuasca stuff, it can kind of free your mind a little bit and open your mind to different things. You talk about jujitsu and flowing,” said Austin Lane.

Lane further elaborated that he picked Aaron Rodgers over Patrick Mahomes, as the latter’s brothers would be a distraction. The former defensive end also believes that Tom Brady has accomplished it all in the NFL. So there’s no need for him to switch sports. “I mean, does he have to do it? He doesn’t need to come dominate another sport. Just do your thing in Tampa Bay, go out on a high note, and we’ll see you later.” said Lane.

Aaron Rodgers has previously stated that he has immensely benefitted from the ayahuasca trips he took during the 2020 and 2022 off-seasons. Rodgers even believes that ayahuasca helped him improve his game and win consecutive MVP awards. So, it only makes sense that Austin Lane would think Rodgers can conquer anything on ayahuasca.

UFC has a list of fighters who used to be former NFL athletes or have played the sport at a decent level. Adding to this list is UFC’s latest pick from the Dana White Contender Series Austen Lane. Lane became one of the newest fighters on the UFC roster after he earned his contract in September 2022.

Austen Lane was a fifth-round pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2010 NFL draft. Lane dedicated 3 years to playing as Jaguar’s defensive end. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears for a small amount of time as well. Lane made his pro mixed martial arts debut in 2017. Prior to earning a contract, Lane appeared in Dana White’s Contender series four years ago. However, Lane was knocked out by another former NFL athlete, Greg Hardy.

With this knockout, Lane went back to the drawing board and made some adjustments to his game. After this, Austen went on a five-fight win streak before gaining another shot at the contender series. Lane was able to defeat his opponent Richard Jacobi in the first round and earned his UFC contract. While Lane has not fought since his fight against Jacobi, a few wins in the division would make him a great heavyweight prospect.
