“Nothing is fair”- Javier Mendez on how Islam Makhachev and Co would deal with Conor McGregor jumping the queue for a title shot
Khabib Nurmagomedov-Javier Mendez-Islam Makhachev
UFC Lightweight Islam Makhachev is all set and done for a title shot once and only if he defeats his last-minute changed opponent in Bobby Green this weekend. Makhachev was originally supposed to fight Beneil Dariush until Dariush got injured and therefore was forced to pull out. Makhachev is 21-1 in the UFC and someone who hasn’t been defeated since 2015, Makhachev is making an incredible run as a deserving candidate for title conversation, until and unless UFC megastar Conor McGregor jumps in.
McGregor is the biggest rival of Makhachev’s mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov who’s now retired from the sport of MMA and is the President of his own MMA promotion Eagle FC. But regardless, McGregor, a former two-division champion of the UFC has been salty about Makhachev’s presence inside the octagon and Makhachev in return would someday bring it on against the biggest UFC megastar in the history of combat sports.
Javier Mendez will prepare Islam Makhachev for anything irrespective of who gets the title shot next
In the midst of all this aforementioned chaos which as of now is only mental and is yet to come to fruition, Makhachev’s striking coach and founder of American Kickboxing Academy coach Javier Mendez talks about how things work in the fight business which eventually is bigger than the fight game itself. The interview was taken by the people of Submission Radio.
“To me the rankings are bulls**t, they always have been bulls**t,” says Coach Mendez “So I don’t care about the rankings, look at Chael Sonnen [MMA Legend], he loses the title fight, he gest another title fight. He wasn’t deserving of it, but maybe he was deserving of them because they gave it to him because people wanted to see him, he’s a good talker you know so whoever gets that opportunity.
It’s like I always said this is not a true sport, this is entertainment first, sports second. So in entertainment value, the UFC wants the most money who’s going to create the most money for them that’s where they’re going to go and guess what that’s what they’re going to do. So we’ll see what the UFC wants, but I’m prepared for whatever they do and I’m not gonna be upset one way or the another,” continues coach Mendez.
“Do I think it’s fair? Absolutely not, if it isn’t that good and doesn’t get the title shot should he beat it’s not fair, but, nothing’s fair…” concludes coach Mendez followed by the example of the amount of trash talking Makhachev’s teammate Khabib had to do in his competitive days to get the title shot.
What do you make of coach Mendez’s comments on the state of Makhachev’s title shot in a dangerous position to be dismissed by a megastar like Conor McGregor? What do you make of the last-minute matchup between Islam Makhachev and Bobby Green? Who do you think gets the job done at UFC on Vegas 49?
