“Dream of becoming a champ doesn’t pay the bills”- Renato Moicano reveals the harsh truth about being a fighter

Renato Moicano

Renato Moicano stepped in on short notice against Rafael Dos Anjos when Rafael Fiziev pulled out from the co-main event of UFC 272. Moicano was coming off from a win over Alexander Hernandez, but taking on RDA at a short notice was too big of a task even for him.

RDA came in well prepared, and he immediately took the fight to Moicano. He took him to the ground and battered him nonstop for 5 rounds. Moicano’s face was a mess, and many asked for the fight to be stopped. The referee had to call in the doctor to check on him, and everyone in the commentary booth literally begged him to stop the fight.

The doctor had to give him a chance to fight, and he showed incredible willpower to at least finish the fight. This became the talk of the town after the event, and even RDA thought the fight should’ve been stopped. Renato Moicano in an interview after the fight thanked the ref for letting him continue.

After his last win against, Alexander Hernandez, Moicano claimed that he wants only big money fights from now on, and accepting a short notice fight against RDA was all part of the plan. In an interview with Combate, Moicano doubled down on his money claims, he said, “One more win and we’ll ask for more money. At the end of the day, that’s what matters. The dream of becoming a champion is nice, but it doesn’t pay the bills. The dream alone doesn’t. I want to become champion, but my goal at the moment is to make money. Have enough of it to support me. Invest, study and make the money work for me.”

Moicano wants to fight another lightweight prospect, Bobby Green next, talking about his future, he said, “We both had tough fights on the same night. So it’s the same waiting time for the both of us. We’re out of the rankings, but we’ve had great showings. It’s a fight that makes sense and I want to take advantage of his hype, too. It’s a winnable fight. I’m better everywhere. I want a main event and I want to put my name on the top. I want to show the UFC I’m ready for anybody.”
