Robert Whittaker issues a priceless apology to Aljamain Sterling

Robert Whittaker accepts his mistake for underestimating Aljamain Sterling before his fight with Petr Yan. It all started after the incident that took place at UFC 259 when Petr Yan got disqualified for landing an illegal knee on Sterling. This cost the Russian his Bantamweight title and Sterling was announced the winner. After that many UFC fighters criticized Sterling for being a fake champion. Whittaker was one of those fighters who didn’t accept Sterling as the new champion.

Ahead of UFC 273, while talking to MAIN EVENT in an interview, the Aussie said “He didn’t win. Petr lost. Sterling didn’t win. Petr lost. Okay. This is how it happened. That is the undeniable truth of the matter. So you can’t go around saying I’m the champ, I’m the best in the world, cause you didn’t win the belt – you were given it. It’s different.

Wttaker was there with the new heavyweight prospect, Tai Tuivasa who had a similar opinion on the matter. It seems like these comments didn’t go unnoticed by Sterling as after winning against Yan at UFC 273, the fighter hit back at the Aussie duo.

After getting tagged by the Bantamweight champion, Robert Whittaker was humble enough to send his apologies to Sterling.

The former middleweight champion replied to Sterling by revealing he is embarrassed by his earlier claims. ‘The Reaper’ sent his good wishes to Aljo and explained that after the fight he had changed his mind about the fighter’s abilities. “Well isn’t there egg on my face…congrats mate, I have recently had a perspective change,” wrote Robert Whittaker.

In the fight against Yan, Sterling gave a shocking performance that almost nobody expected. The fighter went in there with a solid game plan and applied it successfully. Sterling used his impressive grappling skills to control Yan throughout the fight and did not give him the opportunity to use his boxing to the fullest. On the other hand, Yan seemed very emotionally invested in the fight and was trying hard to knock out Sterling. Clearly, it didn’t work out well for the former champ.
