“You’re freaking out,” Sean O’Malley explains being on the verge of death during scary 10-pound weight cut in one night
Weight-cutting impacts every fighter in different ways. However, most fighters feel closer to death during a cut at least once in their career, and Sean O’Malley felt the same.

Weight-cutting is a tough process for fighters. UFC contenders like Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier have spoken about the difficulties of weight cuts affecting their physical and mental health. On a podcast with comedian Andrew Schulz, bantamweight title contender Sean O’Malley gave his thoughts on weight cutting.
On the Flagrant podcast with Andrew Schulz, ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley touched on the frightening aspects of losing weight for a fight. “When you’re on scale, you could give a f****** less about fighting, any food. You just want water,” said the Montana native. Part of the risk for a certain fight remains the bout cancelation if they do not reach the weight limit. O’Malley continued, “Your lips are dry. You can hardly talk. Your voice is raspy. You just want water.“
“So, Thursday night is when you could cut the majority of the weight,” said Sean O’Malley. He continued, “Eight, nine, ten pounds, and then in the morning. Some people cut it all in one night, and then, you don’t sleep, you are freaking out.” O’Malley stated that the body being in starvation mode makes fighters feel closer to death than getting punched in the face while fighting. Half of the battle preparing for a fight hinges on the weight cut.
Weight cutting is a horrific experience to go through for fighters. Naturally, heavier contenders go through a rough few nights attempting to reach the weight limit. Such was the case for ‘Suga’ as he struggled to maintain the cut and step on the scale to reach the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds.
Sean O’Malley wants to fight Gervonta Davis
The magnificent bout between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is a precedent for MMA fighters to switch to boxing. Sean O’Malley also wanted to get in on the action and challenged vicious boxer Gervonta Davis. The American boxer recently defeated Ryan Garcia in a dominant fashion. Despite that, ‘Suga’ confidently called Davis out.
“That fight [against Ryan Garcia] might have put him over the top where he could be ‘that guy,‘” said O’Malley. He continued, “I’ve been saying it for years. When Conor fought Floyd, I was all about it. I’ve always wanted to be a part of something like that. And, me versus Gervonta, if I keep winning, I gotta be the champ. Potentially a double champ. He’s gotta continue to be great in the sport for the next five years, that’s a potential massive super fight that I’ll be interested in.“
Despite the trend of MMA fighters having disastrous outings in the boxing ring, O’Malley will try to reverse it by fighting Gervonta Davis. The Montana native seemed confident to box one of the biggest punchers in the sport. His revelation shocked the hosts, but ‘Suga’ remained calm and stern about his decision.
