“It’s my fault,” Sean O’Malley reveals what led to Petr Yan’s defeat against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 273
Sean O'Malley reacts to Petr Yan's loss against Aljamain Sterling
Petr Yan faced a devastating defeat at UFC 273 against his nemesis Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley believes emotions got the better of Yan during the fight.
In the co-main event of UFC 273, Petr Yan had the opportunity to snatch the bantamweight belt from his rival, Aljamain Sterling. However, Yan failed to do so as he fell short to Sterling after five rounds of an intense fight. Sterling won the fight via unanimous decision after a smart display of his wrestling to keep the Russian at bay with his dangerous striking.
Sean O’Malley, a rising bantamweight and a PPV superstar reacted to this fight on his podcast, “The Timbo Sugar Show“. Leading up to the fight, Yan was forced to leave his teammates behind owing to visa issues and O’Malley jokingly offered to corner Yan at UFC 273.
“Yan’s takedown defense is so elite,” said O’Malley on the podcast. “His hips, hand on the head, he’s got sick takedown defense, but he fought so emotional from the beginning of the fight. Dude, so emotional.”

Sean O’Malley apologizes for not cornering Petr Yan
“Those looping punches, he fought super emotional and I should’ve been in his corner and told him, ‘Yo Petr settle down, bud’. So I’ll take that L, that was my fault,” said Sean on the podcast, jokingly. After talking about Yan, O’Malley praised Sterling for keeping his mind straight and despite all the trolls leading up to the fight.
“It was impressive Sterling’s mindset going into that fight considering what had already happened to him in the previous fight,” said O’Malley. “For him to go in with that mindset of not letting that affect him was super impressive. I think that showed championship mindset for sure.”
