Robert Whittaker teases a move to the welterweight division
If you loved seeing Robert Whittaker in the middleweight division, the “Reaper” has some bad news for you. The former middleweight champion is looking to go back where he started his UFC career.
It is no surprise that the UFC middleweight contender Robert Whittaker might decide to move to an entirely different weightclass after looking at his possible matchups in the future in the 185-lb division. The former champion seems to be contemplating a move to the 170-lb division and it might not be the worst thing for him given the situation at middleweight.
In a recent tweet, Robert posted a picture of him looking ripped and wrote, “Skinny Rob might be coming back sooner than I wanted.” It is clear that Whittaker might be forced to take this decision after his recent outing in the middleweight division. Whittaker is coming off a loss against the champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 271. This was his second loss to the Nigerian in a title fight.
Why moving to the welterweight division might be a good decision for Robert Whittaker?

The middleweight division is undoubtedly in the hands of Israel Adesanya. The champ is undefeated as a 185-pounder and is lapping the division. Robert Whittaker is undoubtedly the second-best fighter in the weightclass but it seems to be that as long as Adesanya holds the throne, Whittaker will not get his hands on the belt again.
He lost his belt to Adesanya at UFC 243 in 2019 and then worked his way back to the title shot by beating three top contenders, only to lose to his nemesis again in 2022 at UFC 271 via unanimous decision. Whittaker started his career in the UFC as a welterweight and has fought five times, accumulating a record of 3-2.
Currently, Kamaru Usman is the champion of the welterweight division and is looking for competition. Whittaker could easily fit into the top contenders of the 170-lb division and look to fight some interesting matchups. What do you think about Whittaker at 170?
