“Time to bring the belt home”- Khabib Nurmagomedov hails Islam Makhachev as the best lightweight in the world

Regardless of the fact that he has left the sport as a professional athlete for a long time now, Khabib Nurmagomedov as a coach will go places and that is quite evident from one of his pupils, #4 Islam Makhachev. Khabib, the former UFC Lightweight Champion who retired in October 2020 and decided to hang gloves after his third title defence due to his father’s demise earlier that year. Fast forward to now, he is preparing Makhachev to become the next UFC champion training out of Dagestan, Russia.

Makhahchev is on a 10-fight winning streak, which is the longest in the UFC Lightweight division alongside the champion Charles Oliveira and is second longest in the UFC roster. Makhachev last fought last weekend when he defeated Bobby Green who came in as a late replacement on a 10-days notice and defeated him within a few minutes of the very first round. Makhachev is now expected to fight the winner of the lightweight title fight at UFC 274 which is going to take place in May 2022, between the champion Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje.

Khabib took to Instagram to pour appreciation all over his long time teammate and protege in Makhachev and wrote in the captions alongside some photos: “You did a great job brother and deserved to be the first contender for the belt and in my opinion, you’re the best lightweight in the world. People can say whatever they want, but I’ve been in this sport for a long time and I know what I’m talking about. Your work, ability, discipline and hard work will pay off soon. It’s time to bring the belt home. Congratulations brother @islam_makhachev

What do you make of Khabib being proud of Makhachev on his way to climbing to the top before becoming the champion? How soon do you think will Makhachev will become the UFC champion? For them who have known each other for well over 20 years, pretty all through each other’s lives, Khabib and Makhachev are no less than brothers and it’s rather beautiful to see the two being there for each other through think and thin.
