Boston is a major sporting city in the United States. The city of Boston has multiple high-profile sports teams like Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, New England Patriots, and Boston Red Sox. Despite being known as a sporting city, Boston has not held more than 10 UFC events throughout their history. UFC 292 will return to Boston for the first time since 2019.

The TD Garden in Boston held the first-ever UFC event in the city in 2010. Since then, the company has only put five more events in Boston. UFC President Dana White hails from Boston but has not put out many UFC events. White has preferred destinations like Las Vegas, Florida, New York, and Texas. Salt Lake City and Miami have recently become favorites after successful PPV cards. However, despite its sporting legacy, Boston has yet to establish itself as an outstanding combat sports destination.

Boston has a chance to establish itself as a fantastic destination for MMA when the city hosts UFC 292. Aljamain Sterling will defend his bantamweight title against Sean O’Malley in the main event. How many UFC events happened in Boston before UFC 292?

UFC 118 in 2010 became the first PPV card to be held in Boston. The card featured the title fight between Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn in a rematch for the lightweight championship. The company returned to Boston in 2013, featuring a Fox Sports card between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Chael Sonnen.

T.J. Dillashaw fought Dominick Cruz in 2016 for the bantamweight title fight in a Fight Night card. Cruz overcame years of injury to defeat Dillashaw to reclaim the title he had to vacate due to injury. The last time the company came to Boston was in 2019. Chris Weidman made his light heavyweight debut against Dominick Reyes at the event. Reyes knocked out Weidman in the first round to win the bout.

Who are the high-profile UFC fighters to compete in Boston events?

Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, Stipe Miocic, and Francis Ngannou are some of the most high-profile fighters to compete in Boston. Stipe, Cormier, and Ngannou competed in the UFC 220 card. Stipe defeated Ngannou in a five-round thriller, whereas Cormier defeated Volkan Oezdemir via TKO.

On the other hand, Conor McGregor fought Dennis Siver in January 2015. McGregor needed a win to secure the featherweight title shot. The Irishman dominated Siver for two rounds and won the bout via TKO. Boston will now host UFC 292, featuring other big-name fighters like O’Malley and Sterling.
