Spike Carlyle and Bill Algeo meet at featherweight during UFC Vegas 15. 27-year-old Carlyle enters the Octagon as the favorite. Algeo, who recently made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 175, lost to Ricardo Lamas by unanimous decision.

Round 1 – Carlyle dodges and weaves around the octagon for the first 30 seconds or so until Algeo connects with a right hand. Carlyle hits him with a low kick and receives a high kick from Algeo as well. Carlyle throws a rapid succession of lefts. Algeo with a left-right combo. Carlyle then charges right into an Algeo left. The significantly taller Algeo continues to throw kicks. Algeo with a left-right-left combo, the last of which makes contact with Carlyle. Carlyle attempts a takedown and manages to get it on his second effort, tries to take his back as they stand but fails. Carlyle still going for it though. Finally, Carlyle manages another takedown from the back. Algeo gets up momentarily, but the Carlyle drags him back to the mat, working his way into a bulldog choke. It’s tight but Algeo does a nice job escaping and now he’s got Carlyle’s back. They scramble and the horn rings to an action-packed first round.

Round 2 – A scramble immediately at the start of the round ends up with Carlyle briefly on top, but both men get back on their feet and work their way into a clinch battle on the fence. They drop down to the mat again, Algeo has Carlyle in a Body triangle and tries to work his way into a rear naked choke, but isn’t quite there. Now Algeo’s almost got a head-and-arm choke, Carlyle turns his back and just avoids getting choked out. Two minutes left. Algeo’s got the body lock. Carlyle finally gets his hands free, but Carlyle grabs a wrist. Carlyle manages to reverse the situation and get top mount. Algeo proceeds to throw elbows on Carlyle from the bottom.

Round 3 – Algeo starts off with a high kick. Carlyle responds by throwing big punches, most of which miss. The pace of the matchup has slowed after the grappling show in round two. Carlyle gets behind Algeo and goes for the takedown, but Alego ends up on top. They return to their feet and Algeo lands a knee before Caryle shoves him back to the fence. They trade a series of blows while fighting for control in the clinch. We’re at the round’s midpoint. Algeo lands a nice kick. Algeo tries to pull guard and it backfires, as Carlyle gets his back. They get back on their feet. Carlyle goes for a single but doesn’t get it, they break and Algeo lands a knee as Carlyle goes for another takedown. They’re up and down off the mat, grappling along the fence toward the end of the round. Algeo lands an elbow. Both guys slow down due to fatigue as the round ends. Close round, close fight.
