UFC Vegas 22: Montserrat Ruiz wrestles her way to a win over Cheyanne Buys

The Women’s Strawweight division bout between Montserrat Ruiz and Cheyanne Buys went down at the UFC Vegas 22 in Las Vegas. The Mexican fighter came into the fight with a record of 9 wins and just 1 defeat in her first 10 bouts. While the American Buys came in with a record of 5-2-0.

Round 1: Ruiz looked to waste no time in standing up and immediately went for the takedown just after a few punches exchanged with Buys. The Mexican tried to go for the clinch and toss but she can’t get it done. But Ruiz is smart enough to grapple her way through to the hips of Cheyanne Buys. The Mexican strawweight with a few punches to the face and Buys is struggling to get out of the canvas. Ruiz completely dominating the fight in the ground as the round ends on the mat.

Round 2: The second round starts with the American looking to keep things on the feet and throws in a nice combo that gets at Ruiz in the very beginning. Ruiz again tries to drive forward but Cheyanne played dodge well. Montserrat Ruiz inevitably manages to get Buys to the floor once again. Buys tried her best to get off the floor but fail miserably. Finally, Cheyanne manages to roll over and get herself up to the feet. The round ends with Buys landing a few strikes at Ruiz.

Round 3: Buys got a lot of advice from her sideline as the team advises her to finish Ruiz off. Cheyanne keeps her distance and desperate to stay on the feet. Ruiz again tried to play to her strength and clinch her opponent. Buys was smart enough to see it coming and escapes. A lot of wonderful kicks thrown towards Ruiz as Buys acts as the aggressor. Ruiz clinches again in the final round. Punches exchanged on the ground till the final bell goes.

Result:  Montserrat Ruiz def. Cheyanne Buys via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)
