UFC Vegas 24: Whittaker vs. Gastelum – Preliminary results

This week’s UFC event has kicked off with an amazing start. The headlining fight of the UFC Vegas 24 is a middleweight bout between Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum. UFC Vegas 24 takes place in UFC Apex, Las Vegas with the event kicking off at 7:30 p.m ET and 4:30 p.m PT.

Though the main event fight is an enthralling and gruesome one, the preliminary card is packed with talented and interesting fighters too. The results for the preliminary card are published below. There are 6 fights with 12 fighters looking to uplift their career.

Results for the preliminary card:

Anthony Birchak vs Tony Gravely

Round 1: The fight started out with both the fighters with some early kicks out front. The fight seemed to be having great pace and movement. Birchak scored with a few strong right hands. Birchak makes sure he switches up with a few low kicks. Gravely with just one minute in went for the takedown and found success. Fight is soon back to the feet. As Birchak makes his way up to his feet, Gravely’s long right hand drops his opponent to the canvas. Surprising that Birchak has recovered is on top now. Gravely makes his way on top and starts throwing big punches. As the bell went, Gravely lands a punch. Great round!

Round 2: The second round kicked off against with punches traded between the two opponents. Gravely wasted no time to go for the takedown. Birchak is found trying to working his way up but Gravely tosses him again. Gravely gave no space to his rival and starts throwing hits. A clean left hook from Gravely with a couple hammer fists and OMG it was over. Gravely knocks out Birchak.

Result: Tony Gravely def. Anthony Birchak via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 1:31

Dakota Bush vs. Austin Hubbard

Round 1: Both the fighters engage in some punches. Bush decided to work his opponents legs in the start. A spinning backfist from Bush towards Hubbard that lands. Thought Hubbard did not make most of the strikes he was the one that controlled the momentum. Punches traded in the middle as Bush is hurt in the eye due to an eye poke from Hubbard. Bush fires back with good punches with some heavy hands missing. Takedown for Hubbard right at the bell.

Round 2: Bush again going with power over precision as Hubbard finds it easy to handle things in the center. Hubbard denied Bush of two takedown attempts which slows down the pace. Austin in for the drive and takes it to the canvas, landing a few punches from the back. In the last minute, Bush is on his feet but soon back to the floor. Round ends with some wrestling.

Round 3: Again Bush turned out the aggressor as he threw jabs on his opponents as the bell went. Bush able to drag the fight to floor but Hubbard reverses as he comes on top. Bush is not willing to quit as he struggles from his back. Hubbard seemed to have more energy than his opponent. Bush really struggling in the last moments of the fight. Hubbard ends the round with him being on top. Excellent round for Austin.

Result: Austin Hubbard def. Dakota Bush via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Bartosz Fabinski vs. Gerald Meerschaert

Round 1: Fabinski wasted no time and acted as the aggressor as he moved forward. Meerschaert is swinging back looking to engage. Both the fighters in a clinch. Meerschaert leads it at the beginning as Fabinski tries to reverse. Meerschaert catches the neck of his opponent and is on top now. Gerald rolled to the side and adjusts as he squeezes Fabinski. Bartosz is not looking to give but Meerschaert had his hands so tight around his neck, he had to go to sleep. Wow the fight was over just like that.

Result:  Gerald Meerschaert def. Bartosz Fabinski via technical submission (guillotine choke) – Round 1, 2:00

Loopy Godinez vs. Jessica Penne

Round 1: Penne the aggressor as he lands a jab early , Godinez does not sit back and answers with her own heavy punches. Godinez looking to work her opponent but Penne is on her feet. Penne using the reach and landing punches from a distance. Nice kick to the body with a knee following it by Penne. Penne looking great, Godinez picks Penne up and throws her to the canvas. But the fight is still on feet. Penne looking to lock a triangle around Godinez’s neck but the bell goes off.

Round 2: Reach, again playing an important role for Penne as she lands on Godinez. Godinez takes her opponent to the fence using her power. Penne defends well. Penne manages to move all the way to the back. She manages a choke around the body again. But Godinez able to work free. Penne with amazing front kicks and Godinez trips Penne down. Loopy threw big punches as she has the power. Takedown attempt, but defended well by Penne as the second round ends.

Round 3: Penne defends against the cage but stays on feet. Godinez was hurt as she was bleeding from the nose. Godinez goes for the clinch and throws her rival to the floor. Back on the feet, Penne wants to go for takedown but doesn’t have the same energy. Penne struggling to deal with opponent’s power. A triangle choke attempt but no success is to be found. The bell goes off and now to the judges.

Result: Jessica Penne def. Loopy Godinez via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Juan Espino vs. Alexandr Romanov

Round 1: Romanov misses his opponent’s jaw by a little as he goes for a front kick. Espino moves forward and throws his opponent on the floor. Romanov is pressing from the top but Espinov manages to stay on his feet. Big left hand from Romanov and he moves back into the clinch. Espino trips the big man to the canvas. Espino looks for his rival’s arm. Romanov manages to stand again. Round ends as Romanov eats a right hand from Espino.

Round 2: Romanov starts off with another big miss. Low kicks traded between the two giants. Espino leaps and scores a knee. Romanov recovers. Romanov starts throwing hammer fists. Espino blocking it but then has to eat some of them. Romanov controls Espino’s neck and looks for a choke. Stalemate at clinch with no progress. Both the fighters are tired and the round ends in a low.

Round 3: Both the fighters come into the round tired and weary. Espino grabs the body and drives to the canvas. Romanov responds by standing up quickly. Espino with a knee to the groin. Romanov drops to the canvas as referee calls for time. He’s in deep pain, doesn’t look like he can continue the fight. The fight will go to the judges after 65 seconds into the round.

Result: Alexandr Romanov def. Juan Espino via technical split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
