The main event of UFC Vegas 34 marks the fight between number third-ranked UFC Middleweight fighter, Jared Cannonier facing the former interim Middleweight champion and number ninth-ranked UFC Middleweight fighter, Kelvin Gastelum. A win for Cannonier will put him into the title contention and a win for Gastelum will help him to take a huge leap into the rankings.
Cannonier is coming into this fight with a loss against the former champion Robert Whittaker in this last fight at UFC 254 and Gastelum is also coming in this fight with a loss against Whittaker on UFC Fight Night: Gastelum vs Whittaker. This fight was booked between Jared Cannonier and Paulo Costa earlier, but Costa pulled out his name and Kelvin Gastelum stepped in at UFC Vegas 34.
Round 1: Gastelum started the fight with a jab and Cannonier replied to him with a kick to the body. Gastelum landed a sharp kick to the leg, both men swung some heavy shots. Gastelum tagged Cannonier with a right hand, Cannonier blocks a high kick. Gastelum lands a hook followed by a leg kick, he shoots for a takedown but didn’t get at as the horn sounds.
Round 2: Both men traded punches to start the round, Gastelum shoots for a takedown but didn’t get it. Cannonier lands a hard jab and Gastelum tried to increase the pace of the fight by landing some stiff combinations. Gastelum chopped the legs and tried to clinch but Cannonier defended it well. Right-hand lands for Gastelum as the round ends.
Round 3: Gastelum landed a shot to the body and Cannonier counters him with a right hand that dropped him. Gastelum gets up very fast and recovers quickly. He tried to land a takedown and Cannonier missed a big right hand. Gastelum swung and Cannonier traded some shots with him. Cannonier lands a jab as the horn sounds.

Round 4: Cannonier lands a leg kick that is caught by Gastelum. He rushed forward and hold him in the clinch against the cage, Cannonier tried to dig some underhooks. He finally sets himself free and lands a low kick. Gastelum stayed right on his pocket and lands an uppercut. They end the round by trading kicks.
Round 5: Gastelum pressed hard as he knows he needs a finish to win this one. Cannonier moved well and landed some nice right hand followed by leg kicks. Gastelum changed levels and Cannonier defended it well by moving him away. He lands a right kick to the body and Cannonier replied with a right hand. They traded until the fight ends.
Result: Jared Cannonier def Kelvin Gastelum (48-47, 48-47, 48-47)
