UFC Vegas 37 Prelims
UFC Vegas 37 prelims are here. After a fortnight, the UFC returns to its Apex Facility. It is headlined by a light-heavyweight fight between Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann. Smith is ranked number 6 in the LHW division, while Spann is ranked number 11. Smith will be looking forward to breaking into the top 5, while Spann, into the top 10.
However, before that, we had the prelims that kicked things off. Here are the results from the UFC Vegas 37: Anthony Smith vs Ryan Spann prelims.
Women’s Flyweight: Emily Whitmire vs Hannah Goldy
Round 1:
Both the fighters exchanged punches and leg kicks. Goldy shot for the takedown. But her attempt was reversed by Whitmire. The fight returned to the ground after a while. Whitmire once again took down Goldy. Just when Whitmire went for a rear-naked choke, Goldy escaped and ended up in back guard. Goldy then went for an armbar which resulted in a submission win.

Bantamweight: Gustavo Lopez vs. Heili Alateng
Round 1:
Both the fighters exchanged punches. The fight went to the fence for a short time. A while later, it returned to the center of the Octagon. Alateng landed a clean right hand which was followed by a barrage of punches from Lopez. Lopez was left with a damaged left eye after a big right hand from Alateng. 10-9 Alateng
Round 2:
A low kick from Lopez began the second round. Lopez went for the kick again, followed by a couple of the same. Alataeng responded with a punch. Right hand from Alateng. Lopez’s takedown attempt is successfully defended by Alateng. Leg kick from Lopez. Right hand from Alateng. 10-9 Alateng
Round 3:
Lopez once again went for the kick, but it didn’t connect clean. A massive overhand right from Alateng followed by a two-punch combo. Alateng is deducted a point for his repeated fence grab during Lopez’s takedown attempts. Lopez landed a few punches. The round ended with an exchange. 10-8 Lopez due to the point deduction
Result: Gustavo Lopez vs Heili Alateng – Unanimous Draw (28-28×3)
Welterweight: Impa Kasanganay vs Carlston Harris
Round 1:
Kasanganay was the aggressor. He began the round with a left head kick. Harris followed it up with punches of his own. Harris’ takedown attempt is evaded by Kasanganay. Harris landed a leg kick after his head kick got blocked. A right hand from Harris rocks Kasanganay, and followed it up with a series of punches until the referee waved off the fight.
Result: Carlston Harris def. Impa Kasanganay via. TKO (Round 1)
Women’s Flyweight: Sarah Alpar vs Erin Blanchfield
Round 1:
Alpar began the fight as the aggressor. She started off with some combinations which was followed by some offense from Blanchfield. Left hand from Alpar. As Blanchfield’s right head kick is blocked, she caught Alpar with punches. Takedown from Blanchfield. She followed it up with massive punches. 10-9 Blanchfield
Round 2:
Blanchfield was defensively brilliant in the second round. Combo from Blanchfield. She followed it up with a takedown. Knees to the body from Blanchfield. There was nothing Alpar could do the whole round. The round ended up with Blanchfield unloading on Alpar. 10-8 Blanchfield
Round 3:
Blanchfield continued where she left off. An impressive combo from Blanchfield. Alpar landed a punch. A rare W for her in the fight. However, Blanchfield answered with a takedown. Alpar couldn’t escape as Blanchfield once again unleashed fists of fury. 10-9 Blanchfield
Result: Erin Blanchfield def. Sarah Alpar via. unanimous decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-26)
Bantamweight: Montel Jackson vs JP Buys
Round 1:
Buys began the round with a kick, but missed. A takedown attempt from Buys was missed as well. He then went for the takedown once again, but was successful this time. After a brief struggle, Jackson is able to escape Buys’ hold. Jackson then attempted a submission move of his own (guillotine). However, Buys evaded it. A couple of submission evasion and takedown evasion followed. The round ended with Jackson landing a couple of knees. 10-9 Jackson
Round 2:
Jackson began the round with a hard combination. Buys was rocked. After defending Jackson’s takedown attempt, Buys went for a guillotine, but Jackson got away. After a brief struggle, Jackson knocked Buys down with a punch. He followed it up with another, before securing a takedown. 10-9 Jackson
Round 3:
Buys was the aggressor. Jackson responded with a punch combo. He followed it up with another which rocked Buys. Jackson followed it up with yet another punch after a momentary pause in the fight. The punch knocked Buys down once again. Takedown from Jackson. Punches from Jackson. 10-9 Jackson
Result: Montell Jackson def. JP Buys via. unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
Lightweight: Zhu Rong vs Brandon Jenkins
Round 1:
Outside leg kick from Jenkins. He followed it up with a combo. Another leg kick landed after a while. Low blow from Jenkins. Leg kick from Jenkins. Punches from Rong followed. Outside leg kick once again from Jenkins. The fight went to the ground and Rong used it to his advantage, landing several punches. 10-9 Rong
Round 2:
Strikes were exchanged by both the fighters. Rong had the upperhand in this round. An elbow and a couple of punches from Rong landed. As the fight gets to the round, Rong keeps him on the canvas and once again used it to his advantage. 10-9 Rong
Round 3:
They began trading right after the bell. Several punches exchanged from both the fighters. Right hand from Rong. Punch to the mid-section from Rong. Rong unloaded punches on Jenkins as he went to the ground. Action shifted to the fence. 6 takedowns from Rong in the fight. Jenkins tries to get back to his feet, but is continuously thwarted by Rong throughout the fight. Rong landed some massive punches in the process as well. Jenkins is unable to defend and the youngest fighter in the UFC roster, earns a stunning TKO win.
Result: Zhu Rong def. Brandon Jenkins via. TKO (Round 3)
Women’s bantamweight: Pannie Kianzad vs Raquel Pennington
Round 1:
Kianzad began with a punch, but Pennington clinched and took her to the fence. Knee to the mid-section from Kianzad. Takedown attempt followed by short punches from Kianzad. Several knees exchanged by both the fighters. Knees once again from Kianzad. Combo from Kianzad. Knee from Pennington. 10-9 Kianzad
Round 2:
Punch from Pennington began the round. She then took Kianzad to the fence. Dirty boxing from Pennington. She began landing clean. Kianzad responded with a combination. Elbow and a punch from Pennington. Kick to the side mid-section from Kianzad. Low kick from Pennington. Pennington took Kianzad to the ground. She dominated Kianzad on the canvas, as the latter struggled to get back to her feet. 10-9 Pennington
Round 3:
Low kick from Pennington began the round. The fight once again went to the fence. Both traded knees to the body. Massive right hand from Pennington. Pennington once again went for the clinch. Dirty boxing from both women. Big left from Pennington, followed by another. Kianzad responded with a knee. Elbows exchanged. Front kick from Pennington. Several strikes exchanged by both the fighters. The fight ended with some wild swings from both the fighters. 10-9 Pennington
Result: Raquel Pennington def. Pannie Kianzad via. unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
Light Heavyweight: Mike Rodriguez vs. Tafon Nchukwi
Round 1:
Quite a slow start from both the fighters. Rodriguez looked quick. Massive elbow from Nchukwi. Big right from Nchukwi. Knee to the body from Nchukwi. Counter from Rodriguez. Combo from Nchukwi, and a takedown as well. Massive strikes landed by Nchukwi. Another takedown from Nchukwi once Rodriguez got back on feet. A number of elbows from Nchukwi. Bombs from Nchukwi. Shots exchanged from both towards the end of the round. 10-9 Nchukwi
Round 2:
Massive left hand from Nchukwi. A blitzkrieg of punches from Nchukwi. Rodriguez wasn’t severely damaged though. Power punches from Nchukwi. Uppercut from Rodriguez. Bombs and an elbow from Nchukwi. He was looking for the finish. Massive left hand from Nchukwi ended the round. 10-9 Nchukwi
Round 3:
Strong left from Nchukwi. A barrage of strikes from Nchukwi, but Rodriguez still held on. Knee from Nchukwi. There was really nothing Rodriguez could do, to get back into the fight. Uppercut from Nchukwi. A barrage of strikes from Nchukwi ended the fight. 10-9 Nchukwi
Result: Tafon Nchukwi def. Mike Rodriguez via. unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
