Islam Makhachev faced King Bobby Green at the main event of UFC Vegas 49. The fight was scheduled inside the UFC Apex, Las Vegas, Nevada. Many felt this fight was the ticket to the title shot for Dagestani and he didn’t give a single chance to Bobby Green in the fight in order to secure his shot.

As many fight fans anticipated, Islam started taking down Green in the first round of the fight. Soon after, Islam took the dominant position over Green and started throwing heavy strikes into his guard.

However, Green managed to absorb the strike by showing his back to Islam Makhachev. But, all went in vain after Islam flattened him again and struck again ferociously. Finally, the referee intervened, giving a TKO win to the Dagestani fighter.

After this win, Islam said: “I’m very happy. I’m training so hard for this fight. I was waiting for Beneil [Dariush], I think he’ll fix his [injury] very soon and we can meet again.” in his octagon interview. It is quite appreciable that even after winning the fight and securing his title shot Islam still wants to face Beneil Dariush in the future.

Another interesting thing that happened at the UFC Vegas 49 was Islam got his 10th consecutive win in a row. The fighter has remained undefeated since 2016.

His winning streak started back at UFC fight night: Poirier vs Johnson. During this period the Dagestani has grown a lot. Losing his childhood coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov (Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father) was a saddening period in between. However, Islam fought through it to be in the position he is today.

With this win, he has finally matched his streak with the current champion, Charles Oliveira. Oliveria’s winning run started back in 2018. Oliveira will be facing Justin Gaethje next and would be looking to top this list again. If he does that, the title fight between Islam and Charles will again be an interesting matchup as Makhachev would get the opportunity to again match Oliveria’s record by defeating the man himself. Quite exciting, isn’t it?

Along with Oliveira, another name that chops the chart is the featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. He is undefeated since 2013 and has won 20 consecutive MMA fights. Of the 20 wins, 10 came in the UFC.
