Justin and Ferguson faced each other at UFC 249 which took place on May 9, 2020, at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. This event was initially expected to take place on April 18 but due to COVID was shifted to May 9. The original main event of the event was going to be the lightweight title fight against Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

But due to COVID restrictions, the Dagestani failed to make it to the fight. As a late replacement, Justin Gaethje came in and filled the shoes as the new challenger for Ferguson. Both Justin Gaethje and Ferguson agreed to fight for the UFC lightweight Interim title and put on a show for the fans.

Immediately the fight turned out to be a classic as the best strikers in the division went all out against each other. But It wasn’t the night Ferguson was expecting it to be. The fighter was out volumed, out powered by the ‘Highlight‘ and after five rounds of a brutal beating, Ferguson eventually lost the fight via TKO in the fifth round.
