Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272
Colby Covington was chosen by Paulino Hernandez after looking at his impressive wrestling resume, Jorge Masvidal was the one who got to give Colby an Orientation at the American Top Team gym in Miami. Masvidal and Covington started seeing similarities between them and became friends, ‘came to the gym together and left together’ said Hernandez.
Covington also used to play a lot of poker which is what bonded Jorge and him, “He broke his hand in a fight and got kicked out by his girlfriend, I said ayy ayy, you can come stay with me…” after which Colby moved into Jorge’s two-bedroom in coconut creek, Miami. Jorge then claimed to show him the ropes and helped him build his career while Masvidal was already a rising star in the sport.
Covington always claimed Jorge to be his ‘best friend‘, trained and lived off of Masvidal’s resources for quite some time and raked up a huge debt with loan sharks after losing at poker. Masvidal claims to have always been on the fence with Colby as a friend as he saw how he treated his friends and family.

Covington who went from the amateur fighter to becoming the interim champ after defeating Rafael dos Anjos, his whole personality shifted to what he was really, underneath, says Jorge Masvidal. Jorge who wasn’t really sure about being friends with a guy who trash-talks a whole country or someone’s wife and kids, it just didn’t feel right to Jorge, while creating distance after Covington got the belt.
Masvidal also talks about how he ‘noticed patterns‘ With Colby’s behavior with his own family and the way he talked to his sister, the way he bitched about his friends, got Masvidal rethinking about having ties with Colby, especially after Colby refused to pay his dues to Hernandez.
Masvidal felt like he was the one who bought the ‘Idiot‘ to the gym and thus paid Colby’s dues for him, to his coach Hernandez. Jorge already was angry at Colby for not paying his dues and being fake, Covington walked around eggshells around Masvidal and usually ran out of uncomfortable situations, especially when confronted.
Masvidal also recalls how Covington called him ‘Robin’ from Batman and after which he met face to face at UFC 241 after months of avoiding. Jorge added that Covington was a bitch as always and didn’t like the confrontation, got angry after Jeorge bad-mouthed him and tripped on the camera wires. Colby then vanished for a while and then lashed out at ATT after which the heat began.
Jorge says that there isn’t a lot of emotions involved and is ‘buisness’ but is a little more personal than usual. Who’ve you got for 272?
