Jon Jones is the most decorated light heavyweight fighter in UFC history and when he was the champion he had a target on his back. Everybody in the division was coming for him and given the competition, fighters tried their best to get a title shot.
One such fighter was Phill Davis who at UFC 172 was on the same fight card as Jon Jones. Davis was fighting Anthony Johnson and Jones was defending his title against Glover Teixeira in the main event. However, throughout the press conferences, a lot of attention was given to the rising beef between Davis and Jon Jones. It was quite visible that Davis was more focused on Jones rather than his opponent Jackson.
Davis was constantly talking trash about Jones in the pre-fight chatter with the media and fans. The former Bellator champion was trying his best to talk his way to the light heavyweight title contention.
During an interview with Ariel Helani, Davis mentioned he’s already inside Jon’s mind. “I’m not sure Jon would take the fight. He can feel me over here. If you could be inside Jon Jones head right now, you could feel my eyeballs burning onto his skin,” said Davis.
“This man is not focused at all,” Jones did not care about the rivalry and warned Davis that he was not focused on what was in front of him. Jones’ prediction was spot on as Davis ended up losing the fight against Jackson via unanimous decision. “Phil Davis Isn’t happy. I told him to focus,” Jones said after the fight and had the last laugh in their rivalry.

Soon after Anthony Jackson’s fight, Phill Davis fought two more times in the UFC against Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader but then decided to exit from the promotion. Davis got an offer from Bellator and Jon Jones was pretty happy for him. Jones believed that it was a good move by the fighter and it would be easier for David to win the title in Bellator.
“I do believe the competition is not as stiff at Bellator as the UFC so I think he’ll definitely be a top three guy in the world now,” Jones said on the Arlovski hangout. Jones also predicted that Phill might win the Bellator championship.
“Good for him. Maybe he’ll even win it. To be a world champion and to make a little more money, that’s a win-win. But good luck crumbling me like a cookie from all the way over there,” As Jones said, Davis did win the Bellator light heavyweight championship by beating Liam McGeary and it took him only four fights to do so.
