Welterweight veteran Neil Magny takes on Mike Malott at UFC 297. Magny suffered a loss to Ian Garry at UFC 292. Garry twisted the words of Magny during the UFC 292 press conference. Magny made a poor remark about disciplining Garry as he did with his kid. Garry twisted the comment and made Magny look like a ‘child abuser.’ The incident took a dark turn when Magny fought for the custody of his kids.
The comments from Garry were used in court to attempt to deny Magny custody. Ahead of UFC 297, Magny addressed the incident and his experience. The entire incident remains unique in the history of combat sports. Never has a comment made by a UFC fighter about his opponent ever been used in court until now. This is what Magny said:
My ability to actually be the parent I wanna be, the father I wanna be...is actually at stake now. Based off what someone perceived I was saying, or how they chose to spin it in the media. That was a very difficult place to have found myself...but that was definitely the lowest thing I've seen an opponent do ever…Neil Magny via Media Day
In the months following UFC 292, Magny had revealed to James Lynch that he almost lost custody of his kids to his wife. While it was just an analogy gone wrong, his own statements, and that of Garry were used in the litigation process to drive the ‘abusive‘ narrative. Currently, though, he looks forward to facing another rising prospect in Mike Malott at UFC 297.
Magny has found it difficult to break into the top five of the welterweight division. He has become the gatekeeper of the welterweight division. Only time will tell if Magny can defeat Malott at UFC 297.
Despite defamation, fighter Neil Magny wishes nothing but good things for Ian Garry and family
Ian Garry has become a target of the MMA community for his recent trash-talks and pulling out of UFC 296. Fighters like Colby Covington, Sean Strickland, and Kevin Holland have roasted Garry on numerous occasions.
Despite almost getting his life ruined by Garry, Neil Magny has chosen to take the high road. He refused to join the likes of Holland, Strickland, and others to mock Garry. This is what he said:
Watching Ian Garry go through what he was going through, I was getting so much like... so many people reaching out to me like, 'Hey, look! Look at this! He's getting it, it's his turn.' And it's like, I don't enjoy this...hope he's able to figure it out. I hope he's there for his kid and move forward, past it, whatever...
The attitude and demeanor of Magny should be applauded. Most fighters would not miss the chance to roast their rivals. UFC superstar Conor McGregor has a heated rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Whenever he gets a chance, McGregor uses it to roast Khabib and Dagestani fighters. However, Magny decided to show compassion rather than berate his opponent.
