Home favorite Ugo Humbert had a daunting task in front of him when he walked onto the court for the third-round match on Thursday (October 31). He was up against World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and easily defeated him in the first set.
Humbert did not let the opportunity slip away from his hands even though he could win just three games in the second set. The final set saw both the players battle it out to book the quarterfinal spot, but in the end, the crowd favorite prevailed, winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
After the match, Humbert said he thought about the third-round match against Alexander Zverev in the 2023 Paris Masters, and it made him ‘stronger’. Zverev had defeated the Frenchman in three sets and Humbert did not want to repeat the same mistakes when he met Alcaraz.
The Paris Masters is one of the tournaments Alcaraz has yet to win as he registered his first win in Bercy in two years after defeating Nicolas Jarry in the second round. Last year in the tournament, Roman Safiullin eliminated the four-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets in the second round.
Ugo Humbert says anything is possible in tennis
Ugo Humbert was also asked about his predictions for the rest of the tournament. The 26-year-old denied answering the question as he wanted to live in the present and enjoy himself.
Humbert is set to face Jordan Thomson in the quarterfinals, scheduled on November 1. They have previously met once, at the 2024 Cincinnati Masters, which the Aussie won in three sets. The six-time title winner is bidding to win his third title of the season after the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Open 13.
