Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk came out in support of her home country, which is currently being invaded by Russian troops. Kostyuk posted a passionate message on her social media account amidst Ukraine-Russia conflicts.
Ukraine is currently under threat from Russia after Russian president Vladimir Putin deployed thousands of troops on the borders to invade Ukraine. Other countries have slammed this sly move from Putin, as he denied multiple times over the past few months that he isn’t planning on invading Ukraine. Now, this blatant move has put the lives of people living in Ukraine in jeopardy and the country is now under a state of emergency.
World No.56 Marta Kostyuk took to Instagram to voice her opinion and said ‘Ukraine is not a part of Russia’ in a strongly-worded statement.
“Ukraine has its own History. Ukraine has its own Culture. Ukraine has its own Language. Ukraine has its own Nation. Ukraine has its own Territory. Ukraine is a sovereign country. Ukraine is not a “part of Russia,” it wasn’t and will never be,” she posted in her Instagram story.
American tennis star and former World No.1, Martina Navratilova expressed her concerns for Ukrainian players who are currently on tour and away from their families in Ukraine. She voiced her support for Elina Svitolina and empathized with her for the situation she is in currently.
Kostyuk crashes out of Qatar Open
After winning both her qualifying matches to earn a place in the main draw, Kostyuk crashed out in the first round with a 6-4, 5-7, 3-6 defeat to Ana Konjuh at the Qatar Open. The Ukrainian No.2 couldn’t capitalize on her first set lead and faced a second consecutive opening-round loss in a week.
Her campaign in the doubles was also short-lived as she and her partner, Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost in the second round against Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in straight sets. The Ukraine-Belarusian were completely outplayed by the third seed pair of Kudermetova/Mertens and lost 6-0, 6-4 in a match that lasted just over an hour.
