Yevhen Malyshev
Former Ukrainian biathlete Yevhen Malyshev has lost his life while defending his country in the war with Russia. The officials confirmed this on Wednesday while mentioning that he was only 19 years old.
The International Biathlon Union’s executive board also released an official statement confirming the tragic news earlier this week, saying Malyshev died following Russia’s invasion.
“The EB expresses its deepest condolences on the loss of former Ukrainian biathlete Yevhen Malyshev (19), who died this week serving in the Ukrainian military,” officials said.
“The EB once again condemns the Russian attacks on Ukraine and the support provided by Belarus and reiterates its hope for an immediate end to the war,” the IBU said in its statement.
Maylshev had once competed on the national team of Ukraine as well as the Kharkiv junior team before ending his career in 2020, the Ukrainian Biathlon Federation told Spanish news site MARCA.
Groups slam IPC for allowing athletes from Russia, Belarus
“How many more lives need to be lost before sports implements meaningful sanctions?” the Athletes of Ukraine and Global Athlete said in their statement.
The groups slammed the decision of the International Paralympics Committee to still allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under a neutral flag, saying the punishment didn’t go far enough.
However, the IPC Governing Board earlier today has decided to refuse the athlete entries from the RPC and NPC Belarus for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. Russia and Belarus athletes have been through numerous suspensions and sanctions from various sports authorities since Day 1 of Ukraine’s invasion last week.
