On Tuesday, Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz eased past former Roland Garros runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. The Spaniard improved to 6-0 in head-to-head meetings against the Greek.
Despite a straight-set scoreline, the match itself wasn’t without its fair share of drama. Deep in the second set, Tsitsipas went to the umpire and complained about Alcaraz’s increased volume of grunt, labeling it a hindrance. However, the chair umpire denied the complaint, and the match carried on.
It was almost like Alcaraz knew Tsitsipas was trying certain tactics to get into his head. That proved unsuccessful as the two-time Grand Slam champion won the big points in the second set before winning the tie-break 7-3. The third seed seized on the lapse in concentration from the Monte Carlo winner to secure his semi-final spot.
Alcaraz will meet Jannik Sinner in a highly anticipated semi-final. This rivalry is considered by some tennis pundits as the new version of the iconic Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal rivalry. The pair have a 4-4 record in head-to-head meetings, with the Spaniard winning their lone encounter in 2024 at Indian Wells.
Social media implodes on Stefanos Tsitsipas’ hindrance claim
In the second set of his highly anticipated Roland Garros quarter-final against Carlos Alcaraz, 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas was at the center of attention. The Greek ace considered the Spaniard’s grunt a ‘hindrance’, implying it was too loud. However, people watching the match on TV and live streaming got a new meme template to entertain Tennis Twitter space.

Although netizens seem to be enjoying the social media meme content, there was nothing funny about Tsitsipas’ performance tonight. After Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal, many expected him to go one step further than he did in 2021. The Greek had lost to the Serbian despite leading by two sets in the final.
However, this will be another massive opportunity missed for Tsitsipas. The good thing is that he is putting himself in these positions where he will hope to come through once and go all the way in a Grand Slam.
However, with the way Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are improving, he will soon run out of these chances. He will return to action in the grass-court season.
