The last PPV of 2021, UFC 269 was full surprises. It was all about upsets and heartbreaks. Julianna Peña, who was the underdog for the fight against Amanda Nunes, created one of the biggest upsets.

The main fight of this event was between Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliviera. Charles Oliviera was put to test by Poirier when he unleashed a barrage of heavy head punches. Oliviera checked them all and survived through the first round of the fight.

In the opening rounds, Poirier went on full beast-mode and battered Oliviera, but Charles was ready with a defensive stance, and he absorbed and countered all the attacks. He just had to weather the attacks and hold on till the challenger went out of gas.

It was easy pickings for Oliviera henceforth, as he systematically dismantled Poirier and in the third round, seeing the opportunity, climbed on Poirier’s back and held on him for a rear-naked chokehold to secure a victory via submission. The fight will always be etched in both the fighters’ minds as one of the best and the most entertaining fight in UFC history.

It was the third time Poirier lost a fight via rear-naked choke. In a post-match interview, he was asked about his fight, Poirier said, “I think I was too far away to hip scoot and butt scoot to the fence. I didn’t want to get too crazy pushing him off and trying to get him like half guard or something and give up my back or anything.”

He went on with a teary-eyed face, “His durability was surprising. I landed a few good, clean shots on him. I thought that was gonna get him away in the first round, but he’s a champ man! The game plan was to take my time. I brawled again when I wasn’t supposed to.”
