Nike’s 2024 Paris Olympics women’s track kit made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Due to the outfit’s revealing nature, several US athletes hailed firestorms on social media platforms, voicing their repulsion over the uniforms. The skimpy body-baring getup concerned the track and field athletes as they’ll be then running miles with an extreme show of the body.
The company was accused of sexism as many questioned if a female opinion was taken into account prior to designing such outfits. The mannequin image on social media wearing the women’s outfit showcased a very high-cut lingerie line triggering criticism from Team USA athletes.
Olympian Colleen Quigley slammed Nike’s outfit saying “They are absolutely not made for performance.” Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku blasted Nike penning, “This is clearly a joke…Where are the shorts?!” Former track and field athlete Lauren Fleshman noted on Instagram,
I’m sorry, but show me one WNBA or NWSL team who would enthusiastically support this kit…If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men should wear it.Lauren Fleshman on Instagram.
She further added that an athlete shouldn’t have to think about her body parts being revealed as she’s competing in the Olympics. Talking about mental space, she blasted Nike for making athletes think about “having every vulnerable piece of your body on display.”
Track and field athlete Tara Davis-Woodhall was astonished after looking at the uniforms. She commented on Instagram, “Wait, my hoo haa is gonna be out.” Fleshmann commented that this is “a costume born of patriarchal forces” and is not welcome in women’s sports.
Katie Moon clears confusion regarding Nike’s outfit after donning one herself
Pole vaulting specialist Katie Moon spoke about the controversy surrounding Nike’s revealing women’s outfits. She explained how Nike has given the option for different wear in case any athlete is uncomfortable with the skimpy dress. She agreed that the mannequin looked bad in the uniform but she herself wore one to show it looks different in real life.
Moon posted an image of herself on X, showing how the uniform is not revealing her private parts like in the mannequin. She added she was comfortable and others could choose or mix and match between 20 different uniforms with tops and bottoms available.
I tried on the same style today and didn’t feel worried about…things…popping out.Katie Moon on X.
She focused on saying, that it’s just her body that fits perfectly with the uniform and she prefers wearing a little cloth to avoid being “hot and sweaty” during competitions. According to her, the USA team has the option to choose between two onesies, three tank tops, two buns, two shorts, and two longer tights. The athletes are free to choose their combination.
