Team USA’s male gymnasts put an end to their winless streaks on the biggest stage of sports. The squad comprising Frederick Richard, Asher Hong, Paul Juda, Brody Malone, and Stephen Nedoroscik put an end to the 16-year winless streak of the team.

The consistent performance from all members led Team USA to a bronze medal placing behind Japan which secured the gold medal and China which won the silver. The last time US gymnasts won a team gymnastics event at the Olympics was in 2008 in Beijing.

It came as no surprise that all the members of the team were beyond elated after their victory. They began celebrating with the national flag in hand, with tears of joy rolling out of their eyes as they finally put their nation back on the map. Since the 2008 Olympics, in the sport of gymnastics, the women’s team has thrived and earned medals whereas the men have struggled.

Brody Malone was emotional after Team USA’s victory at Paris Olympics as he came back from a career-ending injury

Team USA’s bronze medal victory was most emotional for Brody Malone, who struggled during the qualifying rounds owing to a knee injury that almost forced him to retire. He underperformed on multiple events and failed to go all the way to the all-around final. Yet, he happens to be the most experienced athlete on this squad.

The bronze now takes the overall medal count of the USA to 20 at the Paris Olympic Games. In 2008, the men’s gymnastics squad won a bronze, before that in 2004, they secured the silver. The last time the men’s gymnastics won a gold medal was in 1984. The events in which the squad thrived were floor, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bars.

It was Stephen Nedoroscik who closed the deal for Team USA with an impressive score of 14.866 in the pommel horse event. For a relatively inexperienced team comprising four athletes who had never competed at the Olympics before, the team did exceptionally well. Right after their victory, the Bercy Arena was flooded with chants of ‘U-S-A! U-S-A!’ joining in the festivities and celebrations of having broken the drought. Frederick Richard and Paul Juda will now compete in the all-around final while Nedoroscik will hope to secure a medal in the pommel horse final.
