The US Open is just around the corner, with the draws for the final Grand Slam of the season having been made on Thursday (August 22). The biggest takeaway from the women’s singles draw is the fact that Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka, last year’s finalists, could face each other one round earlier this time around.

Gauff clinched her maiden Major title at the US Open last year, beating second seed Sabalenka in just over two hours at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. She came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and become the first American teenager to win a Grand Slam singles title this century.

Sabalenka, who recently won the Cincinnati Open title, was disappointed to lose the title despite starting the final strong and she will be looking to make amends against Gauff, with the two players on course to face each other in the semifinals this year.

Gauff will get her US Open campaign underway against France’s Varvara Gracheva. She could then face World No. 27 Elina Svitolina in the third round followed by a possible fourth-round clash with fellow American Emma Navarro, who ended her Wimbledon last month. Reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova awaits Gauff in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Sabalenka, who will take on a qualifier in her opening match of the tournament, could face Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round. The Russian has proved to be a difficult opponent for the Belarusian, with their head-to-head tied at 3-3. Sabalenka could then face either 14th seed Madison Keys or 17th seed Ons Jabeur in the fourth round.

Naomi Osaka, who won the US Open in 2018 and 2020, will return to the event for the first time in two years. She has not played at the event since becoming a mother. The four-time Grand Slam winner is set to get her campaign in New York started with a first-round clash with former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Iga Swiatek handed a relatively easy draw, on course to face Elena Rybakina in the semifinals

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has been handed a relatively easy draw, though there’s potential for a few hiccups. She will get her title charge going with a clash against a qualifier in the opening round.

Swiatek could face tricky teenager Mirra Andreeva in the fourth round and either Jessica Pegula, who won the Canadian Open and finished as the runner-up in Cincinnati, or Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals.

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina, who has never gone past the third round at the US Open, could be Swiatek’s semifinal opponent. The former Wimbledon champion also takes on a qualifier in the opening round and might face a tricky test against Caroline Wozniacki in the third round.

Fifth seed Jasmine Paolini, who has finished as the runner-up at the French Open and Wimbledon this year, will face former champion Bianca Andreescu in the first round. The Frenchwoman could lock horns with Rybakina in the quarterfinals.

Seventh seed Qinwen Zheng, who won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, will face American Amanda Anisimova in the first round.
