Iga Swiatek vs. Jessica Pegula: Match Preview
After clinching the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, Iga Swiatek played the Cincinnati Masters, her first tournament on the North American hard court. She reached the semifinals where eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka defeated her in straight sets.
Swiatek kick-started her US Open campaign by overcoming Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets, after which the Pole defeated all her opponents easily. En route to the quarterfinals, Swiatek knocked out Ena Shibahara, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Liudmila Samsonova.
Jessica Pegula, after an early exit from the Paris Olympics, played at the Canadian Open and won the title by beating compatriot Amanda Anisimova. She advanced to back-to-back finals when she played at the Cincinnati Masters, but she lost the title to Sabalenka in straight sets.
Iga Swiatek vs. Jessica Pegula: Match Prediction
Iga Swiatek is a force to be reckoned with on clay, for she has won four French Opens already. The 2022 US Open champion has the ability to emulate her success on hard courts as well. As she plays aggressively, she hits a lot of winners but is prone to double faults as well. She slides better on clay, but she has developed the ability to do so on hard courts. Her other strengths include her speed and court coverage.
Pegula’s forehand and backhand are powerful as well. Although she may lack Swiatek’s athleticism, she has learned the tricks to be an all-around player and knows where she is hitting her shots. Pegula has won two titles, while Swiatek clinched five on the WTA Tour and the Olympic bronze medal, this season.
Even though Pegula has been producing consistent performances on the hard courts, she is trailing 3-6 in their head-to-head encounters. They last met in the final of the 2023 WTA Finals, which Swiatek won.
Match Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
