Sixth seed Jessica Pegula is gunning for her first Grand Slam title at the 2024 US Open. The American, who failed to get past the quarterfinals at a Major before Wednesday (September 4), broke that streak when she beat World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
The 30-year-old will face an in-form Karolina Muchova, who is yet to drop a set in New York this fortnight. Muchova is only in her sixth tournament following her recovery from a wrist injury she suffered at the US Open last year. She is currently looking to win her first title of the year at the US Open.

Jessica Pegula vs. Karolina Muchova: Match Preview
Since Jessica Pegula returned from injury in June, she has been playing her best tennis. In just her second tournament after injury recovery, she beat Anna Kalinskaya 6(0)-7, 6-4, 7-6(3) to win the Berlin Ladies Championship.
At the Canadian Open, Pegula found her rhythm following a disappointing Paris Olympics. She beat compatriot Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to win her second title this season. She then reached the Cincinnati Open final, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in straight set.
At the US Open, she earned straight-set victories over her opening rounds opponent. She defeated the in-form Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 16 before ending Iga Swiatek’s run at the US Open with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 victory.
In contrast, Karolina Muchova didn’t begin the season until July. The Czech Republic player has had tough luck with injuries recently. She broke into the Top 10 after a runner-up finish at the French Open and a semifinal exit at the US Open last year, when she was sidelined with a wrist injury and required surgery just two months into this season.
On her return to action, Muchova gradually hit form, first crashing out of Wimbledon in the first round before reaching the final of the Palermo Ladies Open, losing to eventual champion Qinwen Zheng. At the US Open, she began her campaign with a commanding straight-set win over Katie Volynet.
The 28-year-old then beat four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka in straight sets before defeating Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2 in the third round. She then ended Jasmine Paolini’s run with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win. Muchova won 6-1, 6-4 against Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia to reach her second consecutive US Open semifinal.
Jessica Pegula vs. Karolina Muchova: Match Prediction
Pegula and Muchova will be facing each other for the second time in their career. They first met at the Cincinnati Open last month, where Pegula came from behind to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32.
While Muchova has shown good form in New York this fortnight, she does look like she’s still recovering from the wrist injury that sidelined her for a while. The Czech star will face a tactical genius in Pegula in the semifinals, which will only make the match even more difficult.
On the other hand, Pegula is in the best form of his career, with one loss in three tournaments. That said, neither Pegula nor Muchova has dropped a set at this US Open, and each has defeated a Grand Slam champion along the way. It promises to be a tightly-fought affair, with the American, backed by a vociferous home crowd, edging the contest.
Match Prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in three sets.
