Coco Gauff vs. Naomi Osaka: Match Preview
Coco Gauff broke down in tears due to her serving problems during the second round of the US Open against Donna Vekic, committing eight double faults. Against Magdalena Frech, the tally was four.
Gauff is bidding to win her second title of the season. During the European clay swing, Gauff played the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, losing both to Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively.
She reached three back-to-back finals on the surface when she advanced to her second French Open singles final. Gauff came from a set down to beat Sabalenka to win her second French Open title (her first was a double title she won in 2024).
But when the grass swing started, Gauff failed to clinch a set in the two tournaments she played, losing in the opening rounds of both the Berlin Open and Wimbledon. Next was the Canadian Open, and Gauff was defeated in the fourth round by eventual winner Victoria Mboko. Before arriving in New York, she played the Cincinnati Masters, where her run was ended by eventual runner-up Paolini.

Naomi Osaka, at the ASB Classic this January, reached her first WTA final since the 2022 Miami Open. After winning the first set, she handed the walkover to Clara Tauson because of an injury.
Following a few more disappointments, Osaka won the Saint Malo Challengers. But on the WTA Tour, her poor run of form continued. She lost to Paula Badosa in the first round of the French Open and to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round of Wimbledon.
On the North American hardcourt swing, then, the 27-year-old was eliminated by Emma Raducanu in the fourth round of the Citi Open. Later the four-time Grand Slam champion reached the final of the Canadian Open but failed to go past Mboko.
Coco Gauff vs. Naomi Osaka: Match Prediction
Both Gauff and Osaka have lifted the US Open. In the final of the 2023 US Open, the 21-year-old beat Sabalenka.
Osaka is a two-time US Open champion, beating Serena Williams in 2018 and Victoria Azarenka in 2020. The Japanese ace, however, has not yet clinched a trophy since beating Jennifer Brady in the 2021 Australian Open final.

Gauff has made the last 16 of the US Open for the fourth consecutive time. But Osaka will be playing in the US Open fourth round for the first time since her win in 2020. Last year, she lost in the second round.
When it comes to the head-to-head matchups, Gauff has the edge. She has won three of the five matches they have played against each other. The two-time Grand Slam singles champion also won their last two meetings. In their last encounter, Gauff knocked her out in the fourth round of the 2024 China Open before reaching the final and winning the title.
Match prediction: Coco Gauff to win in three sets.
