Alexandra Eala vs. Iva Jovic: Match Preview

Both Alexandra Eala and Iva Jovic are in decent form this season, with both reaching a final. Before arriving at Flushing Meadows, Eala competed in three events on the North American hardcourt swing, winning the Citi Open by defeating home favorite Jessica Pegula. It was Eala’s career second final following the 2025 Eastbourne International, which she lost to Maya Joint.

At the Canadian Open, she lost to Belinda Bencic in the fourth round and to Amanda Anisimova in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters. Eala made deep runs in almost every tournament she played on grass, reaching the semifinals of the Berlin Open (lost to eventual champion Linda Noskova) and winning the Birmingham Open (a WTA 125 event).

Eala produced her best Grand Slam performance when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, losing to two-time Grand Slam singles finalist Jasmine Paolini. In the third round, she upset six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. At the Australian Open and the French Open, Eala’s run ended in the first round.

Jovic, on the other hand, produced her best Grand Slam performance when she reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on her second appearance in the event this year. She lost the match to four-time Grand Slam singles champion and eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka.

Jovic reached her career’s first tour-level final at the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open, where she beat Emiliana Arango. Then this year, she made it to the final of the Hobart International, but lost the match to Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Before arriving in New York, the American ace competed in two events on the North American hardcourt swing, losing in the third round of both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters. Jovic is competing in her home Slam for the third time in her career after making her Grand Slam debut here back in 2024, losing in the second round. She lost in the second round last year as well.

Eala has met Jovic twice, losing both matches. They met for the first time in the first round of this year’s French Open before facing each other in the fourth round of the Queen’s Club Championships.

Both matches ended in straight sets. Because of Jovic’s past performances, she will be the favorite to reach the fourth round.
