Coco Gauff vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Preview

Coco Gauff has been enjoying great form since Wimbledon, where she reached the semifinals for the first time in her career. She has now reached the semifinals of every tournament she played on the North American hard-court swing.

At the Canadian Open, she lost to eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. Then went on to defeat countrywoman Jessica Pegula in the Cincinnati Open final, also winning the first title of the season.

She also played the finals of the Miami Open and the Italian Open, losing to Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina, respectively. Gauff would have reached her career-best ranking of No.1 had Rybakina exited before reaching the semifinal and she took home the title.

But Rybakina’s win over Qinwen Zheng ensured that she will officially reach the top of the No.1 rankings on Monday next week, dethroning Sabalenka, who has been occupying the position since removing Iga Swiatek toward the end of the 2024 season.

Rybakina is chasing her third title of the season after wins at the Australian Open (beat Sabalenka) and the Stuttgart Open (beat Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Muchova). She also reached the final of Indian Wells and the Canadian Open, losing to Sabalenka and Swiatek, respectively. Before arriving at Flushing Meadows, the 27-year-old was forced to give the walkover to Swiatek in the fourth round of the Canadian Open due to an injury.

Coco Gauff vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Prediction

Gauff clinched her first Grand Slam title by defeating Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final. Gauff defeated the four-time Grand Slam singles champion in the French Open final last year to win her second Major singles title. The 22-year-old also made the final of the 2022 French Open but lost the match to Swiatek.

Rybakina, on the other hand, claimed her career’s first Grand Slam title by beating Ons Jabeur in the 2022 Wimbledon final. After losing the 2023 Australian Open to Sabalenka, the Kazakh ace downed the World No.1 in this year’s Australian Open final.

At the French Open and Wimbledon this year, Rybakina lost in the second and third rounds, respectively. Gauff, following her quarterfinal defeat in Melbourne this year, failed to defend her title in Paris before reaching the last four in the grass-court Major. While Gauff is a former champion in the New York Slam, Rybakina had never progressed past the fourth round here before this season, reaching the last 16 last year.

Gauff and Rybakina have met twice before and are tied at 1-1 in the head-to-head matchups. The American ace emerged as the winner when they faced off in the third round of the 2022 Canadian Open. Rybakina clinched the win in the semifinals of this year’s Canadian Open.

Match prediction: Coco Gauff to win in three sets.
