Lyudmyla Kichenok won the US Open women’s doubles title with Jelena Ostapenko. The victory came just two days after Kichenok postponed her wedding to keep competing in New York.
Kichenok had planned to marry her fiance, Stas Khmarsky, this week. However, the wedding date clashed with the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, so they delayed the ceremony.
My boyfriend could be husband actually because we were supposed to get married this Wednesday, but it didn't happen. We had an appointment to get married this Wednesday, but just because we were playing the semifinals, it didn't happen.Lyudmyla Kichenok said in her post-match interview
Kichenok and Ostapenko went on to win the final, defeating Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-3. The pair did not lose a single set on their way to the title. This was their second Grand Slam final of the year. Earlier, they finished as runners-up at the Australian Open, losing to Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens.

The 32-year-old posted an Instagram story to announce her engagement. She proudly showed off her ring with a red heart emoji. Khmarsky shared the news on his Instagram too. This relationship has been mostly down to the success of Kichenok and Ostapenko as a doubles pair since 2022. They reached the semifinals at two Grand Slams and won WTA doubles titles in Birmingham and Cincinnati in that season.
Despite the war in Ukraine, Kichenok had her best season in 2022. Her fiance is also Ukrainian, and they got to know each other better when they attended Ostapenko’s birthday party in Latvia in June 2022. They found it hard to return to Ukraine after that.
