Aryna Sabalenka triumphed over Amanda Anisimova in straight sets to clinch her fourth singles Grand Slam title of her career at the US Open. She played the final in New York for the third straight time in her career.

In the previous two editions, Sabalenka succumbed to a three-set defeat to Coco Gauff in 2023, while last year, she beat Jessica Pegula in straight sets. It was Pegula whom Sabalenka beat in the last four in this year’s US Open, becoming the first non-American in the Open Era to win the US Open after beating home favorites in the semifinals and finals in consecutive seasons (last year she knocked out Emma Navarro in the semifinals).

Sabalenka’s attempt to defend her title at the Australian Open, as well as lift her first French Open title, ended in disappointment as Madison Keys and Gauff beat her in three sets in the finals. Then at Wimbledon, Sabalenka’s run was ended by Anisimova in the semifinals. Sabalenka now holds a 4-6 head-to-head record over the 24-year-old and has improved her win-loss record in Grand Slam events to 3-3.

However, one incident after the conclusion of the match sparked controversy. During the trophy presentation, the presenter interrupted both Sabalenka’s and Anisimova’s speeches.

Fans slam the US Open presenter for interrupting Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova’s speeches

Anisimova was thanking the crowd when she was told Brian Vahaly, the President of the United States Tennis Association, would be giving her the runner-up trophy. Anisimova joked that she was not yet finished.

The presenter did the same when Sabalenka was addressing the crowd. She also joked and said she had to thank her team after giving them a hard time. Fans criticized the presenter for these interruptions.

Sabalenka has become the third player in the Open Era, after Naomi Osaka and Kim Clijsters, to win her first four Grand Slam singles titles on hard courts. She will continue to maintain her spot at the top of the rankings, while Anisimova will reach her career-best No.4.

Darren Cahill Reacts to Aryna Sabalenka’s win over Amanda Anisimova

Jannik Sinner‘s coach, Darren Cahill, lauded Sabalenka for the way she has performed this season. He also convinced Anisimova that she will eventually improve as a player when she gains more experience on the tour.

She put herself into a couple of finals now. Her career is really just starting. Full credit goes to Aryna Sabalenka. She’s the number one player in the world. She’s put herself into a position to win a few of the majors so far this season, and she showed a lot of composure and a lot of calm today. And I think that was the difference between the two players.

Darren Cahill told ESPN

For Sabalenka, it was her third Big Title of the season after her victory at the Miami Open and the Madrid Open. Apart from these, she also clinched the Brisbane International. Anisimova played her fourth final of the season at Flushing Meadows and has only taken home the Qatar Open (also her first WTA 1000 title of her career) by defeating Jelena Ostapenko.

In fact, Amanda looked a little bit like Aryna did about five years ago when she was quite emotional on the court, and she would learn from these experiences, and she will get better. And she was outclassed today by a more experienced opponent in Aryna Sabalenka. Well done to Aryna.

Darren Cahill added

Cahill will be present in the stands of Arthur Ashe Stadium during the men’s final when his protege Sinner will aim to cross the last hurdle in the form of Carlos Alcaraz to defend his crown. Sinner is also bidding to win his third Major of the season.
