The one game that the NHL fans had been looking forward to the entire week was the matchup between the USA and Canada. On Saturday, the two rivals took part in a thrilling contest with the United States emerging as 3-1 victors.
This was the first matchup between the teams in over 9 years. The last time they met each other in a competitive hockey game was at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016. In the group stage game that time, Canada came out as 4-2 winners.
The match lived up to its expectations. There were some early fireworks as 3 fights broke out within the opening 9 seconds of the game.
It was Canada who landed the first real punch as Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid opened the scoring. The 28-year-old would sprint forward after receiving a puck from Duck Doherty and tuck it past Connor Hellebucyk to make it 1-0 for his team.
USA would quickly answer back through Jake Guentzel. After McDavid got lined up in the U.S. defensive zone with a big hit, the Americans moved forward allowing Jack Eichel to set up Guentzel for the leveler.
Dylan Larkin turned the game around for the United States in the second period. Geuntzel then scored his second of the game. As Canada chased the match, they would leave their net empty. Guentzel would take advantage of this and tucked it an empty-netter to seal a 3-1 victory for his country.

The match also broke a long winning streak. With Sidney Crosby in the line-up, Canada had not lost their 26 matches, dating back to the preliminary rounds of the Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010. That time as well Canada had lost to the United States.

With Finland winning 4-3 in overtime against their rivals Sweden earlier in the day, things have got interesting. While America is through to the Championship game, Canada has some work left to do. They will have to beat Finland in the final game to set up another encounter with the United States next week.
