India has been excelling at consistently producing batting prodigies over the decades. From the likes of Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli and now Shubman Gill, India has always had that one talisman batter on their side who likes to rule from the front.

As Shubman Gill is hitting his peak form at the international scene, one can already see his successor in the form of young 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Suryavanshi stepped onto the stage last year, debuting for the Indian U-19 team at the age of just 13.

Now with some IPL exposure under his belt that also included a stunning whirlwind century, he has become double the batter he was last year. His growth is visible in his performances. The young one, who is currently playing for the U-19 team as visitors to Australia, marked his presence overseas with a remarkable hundred in the youth Test between the two teams.

Australia, batting first, scored a decent 243 at the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane. When India came to bat, all uncertainties were put to bed as Suryavanshi, who opens the batting, scored a mammoth 113 off just 86 balls, in which he got to his hundred in just 78 balls.

In his stunning century, he hit 9 fours and 8 sixes. His aggressive intent was visible right from ball one, as he started his innings with back-to-back boundaries. Not only he brought back time in the game with his speed, but also allowed others to take their time around him.

Number 4 batter Vedant Trivedi also got to his hundred. 100s from the top order batters allowed India to go past Australia comfortably and currently have stationed themselves in a solid lead with finishing their first innings on 428 all out. After the day 2 end, Australia trails by 177 runs with the loss of one wicket.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi shines in memorable first tour of Australia with the U-19 set up

Vaibhav Suryavanshi might have landed in the Indian U-19 set up at the age of 13, however, his real coming of age took place in the IPL once he turned 14. Sitting with great international players for a span of two months must have taught the young star a lot about his own game.

It has reflected in the way he has adjusted to the bounce driven pitches in Australia. In the three ODIs between India U-19 and Australia U-19, Suryavanshi scored a total of 124 runs in three matches at an average of 41.33.

He was the third-highest scorer of the series and looked a class apart in the second ODI. Suryavanshi scored an eye-catching 70 that included 5 fours and 6 sixes. His sheer six-hitting ability is what people are in awe of.

India comfortably dominated the ODI series, winning each of the three matches, and that too, by healthy margins. This is a good tone setter before the senior men’s team travels down under for a long White ball series.

Suryavanshi, because of his tender age, is a name that pops out of most scorecards; however, the team is packed with multiple stars of the future. Captain Ayush Mhatre, who had his own salivating debut in this year’s IPL, and Abhigyan Kundu, also make the squad a strong set up.

India U-19’s elevating Australia tour still has one youth Test left, which will start on October 7, and post that the team will return home.
