Riot Games, the developer of the popular first-person shooter game Valorant has announced that Omen, one of the game’s “controller” agents, will be receiving major nerfs in the upcoming patch for Episode Six.

In the patch, Omen’s ability, Dark Cover, will no longer be able to create “one-way smokes,” which are smokes that cover the view of the enemy but allow allies to see them, creating a “one-way” angle. Previously, when Dark Cover was placed within a wall, it would stay in place. Now, it will fall to the height of the nearby ground.

One-way smokes are a part of the game, but they are considered difficult to play against and Riot wants to keep them limited to intentional and understandable areas. In the patch notes, Riot stated, “We’ll be keeping a close eye on how this impacts Omen’s power level.”

Unlike other controller agents, Omen was able to unintentionally throw his Dark Cover and create one-way smokes that gave him an advantage. Other controllers like Astra, Brimstone, Harbor, and Viper can also create one-ways with their abilities but it takes intention to make them work, where Omen players could simply get lucky with them.

The Dark Cover nerf now puts Omen on par with the other controllers, forcing those who play him to methodically play with his smokes and place them accordingly. With his Dark Cover no longer being able to stick to surfaces, his usefulness as a controller drops slightly. Previously, Omen was one of the best agents to use for smokes on most maps. However, with these changes, players may opt to switch to a more reliable agent.

One of the bugs that will be fixed is related to Cypher’s Trapwire (C), which could be placed through Sage’s Barrier Orb (C) creating an unintended interaction. Additionally, objects like traps that were not being damaged if they were placed in molotov patches that were already active will be fixed in the patch. Another bug that will be fixed is where players could see Skye’s Seekers (X) on the minimap while they were still invisible if they had line of sight to their hidden location.

Another set of changes includes various gameplay damage interactions that will be fixed in the patch. For example, Killjoy’s Lockdown (X) will now properly take damage from all abilities. Additionally, Skye’s Trailblazer (Q) will no longer deal damage to enemy Skye’s Trailblazer (Q) and Sova’s Owl Drone (C). Some other examples of gameplay interactions being fixed include Sova’s Hunter’s Fury (X) and Breach’s Aftershock (C) not damaging Raze’s Blast Pack (Q) and Phoenix’s Blaze (C) not dealing damage to Harbor’s Cove (Q), Raze’s Blast Pack (Q) and Reyna’s Leer (C).

These bug fixes and gameplay changes will go into effect alongside the Episode Six patch, which is set to release on Jan. 10. These updates are meant to make the game fairer and more balanced for players, and to correct any unintended interactions that may have arisen. The goal of these updates is to keep the game fresh, competitive, and enjoyable for players to experience.
