Jubilant Vanderbilt fans couldn’t stop themselves from the iconic celebration of ripping off the goalpost after the Commodores beat the #1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. It was Vanderbilt’s first win over their SEC opponent since 1984.

Bama were high on confidence after beating its old foe, the Georgia Bulldogs, in the previous game and were elevated as the best college football team before facing Vanderbilt. It was an upset in the truest sense as the Crimson Tide were -22.5 point favorites with over/under 55.5 (one of the biggest margins this season) to secure their 5th straight win.

Clark Lea’s Vandy broke a 23-game losing streak with a 40-35 scoreline. In their last meetings—when Nick Saban was in charge—the Tide won by a combined point margin of 148-3.

On Saturday, Vanderbilt took an early lead and never looked back. Quarterback Diego Pavia contributed with 16 of 20 completed passes for 252 yards and 2 passing touchdowns (152 QBR). Pavia also ran the ball 20 times for 56 yards.

Eli Stowers caught 6 passes for 113 yards (18.8 yards per catch). Sedrick Alexander carried the ball 21 times for 64 yards and scored 2 rushing touchdowns.

Heisman hopeful Bama quarterback Jalen Milroe began the day with a turnover for pick-6 and continued to have a bad game. Milroe ended with 18 of 24 for 310 yards, 1 passing touchdown, and 1 interception. Rookie Ryan Williams had 3 catches for 82 yards (27.3 YPC) and 1 receiving touchdown.

After the game, Vanderbilt fans ripped the goalpost off the ground and formed a parade. Video footage revealed that they were headed for Broadway.

Vanderbilt troll Nick Saban after beating Alabama

Even though both teams play in the SEC, Vandy has always been the underdog, winning just 19 games against the Crimson Tide (20 after the recent win, 20-62-4) in this fixture’s history.

Former head coach Nick Saban had predicted another Bama win.

The only place you play in the SEC that’s not hard to play is Vanderbilt. When you play at Vanderbilt, you have more fans there than they have. That’s no disrespect to them. That’s just the truth.

Nick Saban told Pat McAfee on Friday

As the Vanderbilt fans were ripping the goalpost off the ground, the AV crew of the Commodores played the interview from the Pat McAfee Show on the jumbotron to troll Saban for underestimating them.

It was Alabama’s first loss after AP ranked them the best team in the country. Next, they will play the South Carolina Gamecocks while Vanderbilt faces the Kentucky Wildcats.
