Vasiliy Lomachenko is heading into his next big fight, knowing that his illustrious career is coming to an end. As such, he will be aiming to regain a world title when he fights George Kambosos Jr. in Australia on May 12. Lomachenko, who turned professional in 2013, had a late start in terms of his career as a professional boxer.
However, this was only because he focused his attention on being an Olympic champion. This proved to be beneficial for him since he managed to secure a gold medal in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He later transitioned to professional boxing, made his way up the rankings, and fought against some of the biggest names in the sport. Subsequently, he believes he is in the final lap of his boxing career because of his age.
But my career is almost done, of course. How many years it’s going to be, one, two, three, that’s it.Vasiliy Lomachenko via Boxing Scene
Vasiliy Lomachenko considers himself an old man in boxing since he is already 36 years old. Yet, he believes that he still has power left, but his days are now numbered. As such, the pound-for-pound boxing legend revealed that he may retire in the next three years.
In addition, Lomachenko also stated that it is becoming harder for him to recover after fights. Hence, since his recovery rate has been progressively getting worse, he cannot predict his condition after the upcoming fight. This is why he isn’t sure whether he will retire in a year or three years later.
Vasiliy Lomachenko’s next fight
Lomachenko hasn’t fought since losing a controversial decision to Devin Haney in 2023. Similarly, his opponent had also lost similarly against Haney back in 2022. Subsequently, Kambosos fought Maxi Huges in 2023 and secured the IBO lightweight title. However, Lomachenko did not enter the ring after his defeat.
Hence, the upcoming fight is being regarded as a redemption fight for both of them to regain their former glory. This is mainly because the two have been associated with being the best boxers in the lightweight division.
As such, both boxers are looking to redeem themselves after their loss against Haney by fighting a worthy opponent. The fight might mean more to Lomachenko since he considers that his time in boxing is limited now. However, George Kambosos is also equally looking forward to the fight so that he can secure a bigger one next.
